    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

VM Carb Vent Hoses

My VM Carb vent hoses between the carb bodies are toast and I was wondering if anyone knows of a good fitting replacement vent hose which are approximately the same ID & OD size as the Suzuki OEM hoses. Suzuki still stocks these hoses but I would rather purchase them locally if possible.

Any number of hardware stores have clear rubber hose or fuel hose that you should be able to find in the right size & use...

I think he's talking about the short pieces of hose that are between carbs 1 and 2, and between 3 and 4. I've had 'em off many times and never thought to measure them.
The ID isn't very much though, maybe 1/8"? Could be 3/16" but I don't think so. Unless you find some tubing that's very flexible, you'll have to disassemble or ar least loosen the carbs to slip the hosing on. The stock hosing (very thick walled) would be very hard to slip on without doing this.
I know someone who forgot to install the hosing after a rebuild and was lazy and tried to slip the stock hosing back on. He got them on but one hose got pinched and a piece of it broke off inside the passage and that piece semi-blocked the venting to carbs 1/2. Poor chap thought he was running lean because the bike was hesitating and felt like it was surging. He swore it was a lean condition after making sure there was good fuel flow. Larger pilot jets, fuel screw adjustments, etc, proved useless. After much frustration, he thought about float bowl venting. He attached a hose to each float vent nipple (he was running without hoses because of pods) and after blowing evenly into each, there was a slightly obvious obstruction at 1/2. Poking around inside revealed the broken off piece of rubber hosing. Removed the piece and problem solved.
Don't ask who the lazy chap was.
 
I know this probably won't be of much help, but on my 550 VMs the connecting pieces for the vents are 18mm long, 6mm ID and just under 12mm OD. As I say probably not much help as the 1000 carbs are probably spaced further apart than my 550. The ID and OD are probably correct, but not the length of the hose.

Yes, I was would like to replace those short pieces of hoses between carbs 1 & 2 and between 3 & 4. I was trying to avoid ordering them from Suzuki so has anyone replaced them from McMaster or some other source?

Ah yes. Pardon my brain fade. 6mm ID sounds right, not the 1/8" I said earlier. For some reason I was just picturing the hole itself in the vent tube that protrudes out from the carb body (which is approx' 1/8"), but the outside measurement of this tube would be 6mm as Don says.
