vm29s on 78 gs1000 the thing runs very well with the 29s and yosh pipe and pods. i know it's probably sacreligious, but i'm thinking of running the stock pipes and airbox . just for convenience and quiet. guess i'm getting old. any input? jeff

Stock airbox and pipes with smoothbores?
i don't know why you would want to do that.

Do you realize what your carbs are worth?

Send me your 29's and I will give you a complete set of VM26SS carbs with stock jetting for your pipe and box deal? *

*If applicable.

Or sell em on Ebay for a relative fortune...

Yes, you're getting old! 8O
Don't be afraid of the dark side. Stay with those smoothies. :)

jdub, I have a set of VM29's on my 78 GS as well. They are runnning rich, too rich. It may have been sediment keeping the needle valve from seating all the way, as I did find quite a bit in the bowls. I cleaned the tank again and sealed it so that should no longer be a problem. It is jetted as recommended for this bike by Mikuni when new. 115main jet, 2.5 needle valve, and 25 pilot. I don't know what height setting the jet needle is at. I set the air screw at 1 1/2 out so far.

Do you know what jets you are running in it? I have the same set up with K&N pods and Vance & Hines 4-1 header. It supposedly ran great for the last owner when it was put away several years ago. Carbs have been cleaned. I will try it again tomarrow when the tank is fully cured. Thanks for any info.

thanks for the feedback everyone

thanks for the feedback everyone

i won't give up the smoothbores. even with the stock airbox and pipes i'll still get the awesome midrange kick that the smoothbores give you. possibly even more of it. the jetting is 120 mains needle in the middle and a 20 pilot which is just a tad rich with the pods and yosh pipe. even so, no pops or coughs and really strong throughout the entire rev range. i'm just playing around with it, trying to make it a a little less obnoxious to the rest of the neighborhood. the unmuffled harleys around here have that covered. jeff

Sorry, I thought you meant you wanted to go back to stock carbs too. Keeping the smoothies should work fine with a stock intake/exhaust. You'll have to play with the jetting of course.
I may still try some smoothies someday. I know back in the 80's they could be ordered through Vance & Hines pre-jetted for the 78/79 1000 with V&H pipe or similar and K&N pods. Do you have any info on the jetting that was in those particular carbs?
I'm assuming your set up is running well? You gave pilot jet, jet needle position and main jet sizes in yours, but do you know the NEEDLE JET and AIR JET sizes?? Thanks, and if you need help with anything, just ask. :)

Jeff, can you also get the jet needle size too?
So that's: jet needle, needle jet, and air jet. Since you say the bike runs very good on your jetting, this could REALLY help others. :) The 29's are kind of a mystery to many here.

jetting that works

jetting that works

OK here goes, needle 5DL31; needle jet 261 06; cutaway 2.0; pilot 20; main 110. this is working beautifully at 2600 feet elevation. this again is with uni pods and the old yoshimura pipe. hope this helps someone out there! jeff

oh yeah forgot the air jet, it's an 09

Thanks for that info! I'm a bit surprised about the 2.0 slide cut-away though.
From what I've heard, the Suzuki's/Kawasaki's should have 1.5
But you say it runs good with that richer cut-away. So thanks! :)

jdub, I'm working on the same carb and engine set up right now. Do you know how far your air screws are adjusted out from the seat? If not and you get a chance could you check them please? I am working on jetting it and mine are only about 3/4 out + or- which seems odd, although it's running very well. My jets are the same as yours except I have a #115 main. Thanks, Jim.

air screws

air screws

hello jim, havent been at the computer for awhile. i just posted a reply to your question. so anyway, 2 turns out on the air screws. i don't know what cutaway you have but mine are 2.0 which is richer than what i hear is correct for this motor. could be why i've got them open so far. all i know for sure is that the bike runs really well as it's set up now. jeff

Thanks much Jeff. That's what I wanted to know on the screws. I do have the 2.0 cutaways also. I'm trying to get mine to lean out on the pilot circuit and having some problems. I have replaced manifold o-rings and will be trying again in a few days. And it has been detemined that the 2.0 cutaways are actually leaned rather than richer. Keith made a error when he posted that and corrected it in another thread.
