A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Was it the rain? I don't know but you might.

1982 GS850GLZ Maroon :) 27500 miles.

Got caught in a thunderstorm yesterday, just as I was about to go on reserve. I kind of felt the engine sputtering a bit, and I put the petcock on reserve. It sputtered more. I realized I had left the choke on a crack (by now I had been riding about 10 mins.) Took off the choke.

Then I hit some heavy rain. The bike seemed to be sputtering - was running about 4000 rpm but wouldn't accelerate (Although I didn't try too much due to the rain)

Could this just have been due to the extremely heavy rain and high humidity or was there something else going on?

Question 2. Later on, out of the rain, I wound the bike up in second gear to just short of the redline (which is 9000 rpm). At about 8500 it seemed to stop pulling, like the power just shut off. 1982 bikes didn't have rev limiters did they?

Cheers

Dave

Maybe the spark plug wires are bad.
Maybe you fouled the spark plugs a bit when running with the choke on.

Answer 1: Had somewhat similar problems with my wife's 850 before I replaced the plug wires. Used to carry a can of WD-40 just to spray on the wires if any moisture was looming on the horizon. Actually, we still carry the WD, just don't need it for the wires any more.

Answer 2: No, no rev limiters. At least not the type you are asking about. Depending on how the rest of the mechanical bits are tuned (valve adjust, carb jetting, air filter cleanliness, etc.), you may have just reached its breathing limit.

Try some NGK Plug Caps. Cheap, quick insurance.

Thanks for the help

Thanks for the help

I never thought of the plugs - was thinking only of the intake area. You guys are the BEST.
