A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

What are all the things that can make a GS smoke?

This is a question posted to anyone and everyone that has any input at all. I am trying to gather info.

For those of you who have not seen or been following this thread: http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/viewtopic.php?t=34488 (another one of my forever threads it seems) I'll bring you up to date quickly.

The bike smokes. Anyone who has followed it can attest to that. I am not 100% convinced it is jetting/carb setup at this point. I have tried a million (not really) combinations of mains and pilot/air settings. The valves are adjusted correctly to be within tolerances. The fuel float levels are all the same and are roughly 3/8" to 1/2 from the top of the bowl down.

Anyway, all that said. I know jetting and carb setup will make it smoke when not right. But this thing gets 24 MPG and smokes no matter what setup I have used?

What other problems could there be outside of the things mentioned above that could be making my bike smoke so bad?

Well, peer pressure, imitating elders, or a desire to look "cool" are the most commonly given reasons to start smoking.

I already made my mind up to be disappointed if I didn't get some replies like this

But the question is a serious one. If anyone has any technical knowledge to share with me, it would be appreciated.

Well, technically it's a psycho-knee-jerk reaction to the input of other idiots (friends), who in turned fell victim to the pressure to "smoke" before you ... I'm no Psychologist, but I hope that explains "peer pressure" for you! 8O

Well that's encouraging Bill. I am going to keep at it and hope that is all it is. I must still be way off then though :?

Rings, valve seals ... mostly rings ... did I mention Rings ?? :? 8)

Does the exhaust smell like burning oil or fuel?? :?: 8)

What color is the smoke?? :?:

Oil level high??

Is your bike under a lot of stress?? Stress can cause an increase in an already smoking bike .... :D 8)

Has your bike moved on to the "harder stuff"?? Might need to check into a rehab (rebuild) ... :)

ok - I'm finished ... 8)

Peer pressure?

When you park it, does the bike often want to face north, and east, towards Norway?

This could signify that the Peer problem is known as Gynt, especially if it is out of tune. This may not be a simple thing, but a composition of concerns, somewhat Edvardian in nature.

When it smokes its pipes in an eGreigious manner, do you detect the fragrance of burnt reindeer dung?

I'm not much of a Tech. guy but in my experience, ANY oil, Too much Gas, or Too Little Air in the combustion chamber will cause Smoke. I suspect with your reduced Fuel Mileage the smoking is the result of Way too much Gas and Way too Little Air. :?
