What is wrong with this picture?

Won't too "lean" or too "rich" cause the pipes to overheat? I remember the old 500 & 750 hondas, the biggest cause of the blue pipes, like most of them had, was start them with the choke on, running rich, and left it for just a very few minutes the pipes would turn blue from overheating. Also if you put a good pipe on a bike & don't rejet, the bike will run lean, causing the pipe to turn blue from overheating. Why would both too lean & too hot cause overheating?

I wonder if the chrome is blue, now that things have cooled down.
I did not see a whole lot of change in the color, but then, I didn't pay particular attention before, so I have to refer to pictures.

I'd pay extra attention to inspecting the outside valves when you adjust clearances. That amount of heat couldn't have been good for them.

Digital cameras are much more sensitive to infrared than the human eye, so it may not have been quite as bad as it looks.

But yeah, it appears the jetting might be screwed up -- way too lean. I wouldn't start it until the carbs are rebuilt, any intake leaks are fixed, and the valve clearances checked.

Don't kid yourself there, Brian. I had shut off the bike, grabbed the camera and turned it on, so the color had mellowed a bit for the picture. They were DEFINITELY RED.

Steve,

You asked whats wrong with the picture. I was looking for whats wrong in the first picture. The side panel emblem ("GS850". not G, not L) is from a 78 or 79, and everything else is 80 or later.

Then I see the 3rd picture, OH ! thats wrong.

.

that actualy can be perfectly normal for aftermarket single wall pipes sitting on choke.

you have light load and a rich mixture so you will have a nice hot blue flame coming out the exhaust ports.

our old service truck at work had a startall in it, (for jump starting trucks) and it was powered by a Kohler 16hp engine and at night you could see the muffler light right up like rudolphs nose, nice and red. and the center of the muffler would get orangish yellow.
never hurt it a bit.

OK, let's get into the details. It must be from '79 because there was no '78 850, as far as I know.
I have not done any research into if or when they changed styles on the side emblems, so this is nice to know.

OK pop-quiz time: The emblem on the left side of the bike is different. What year bike did it come from?

My son and I have been talking about what he wants to do for a paint job, so we will be getting all new emblems, anyway. They would all match and be nice and shiny for the new paint. The trick now is getting him to wait until we prove that the mechanical stuff on the bike will be worthy of the new paint. I would hate to go to all the trouble of painting the bike just to find out the engine is trash. :(

I should also note that there have been a few pleasant surprises with this bike. We got the usual box of "stuff" that tends to accompany a bike along with the Windjammer fairing, complete with the Cycle Sound radio housing and radio. (I have not tested the radio yet, but they are cheap and easy to replace.) The previous owner (Max) pointed out a couple of oil filter boxes, horns, highway pegs, fairing mounting bracket, mirrors and other stuff. All well and good. My son was poking around, looking inside the oil filter boxes and found that one of them did not have a filter in it. Instead, he found four NEW carb diaphragms. \\:D/

I then found a key in my vast collection that would open the locked compartment of the Windjammer. In there, I found a receipt from the Suzuki dealer in New Haven, Connecticut for rear brake pads AND THE BRAKE PADS. Guess what I happened to 'need' when working on the rear brakes? Yup. Nice to not have to spend anything on the bike (yet), other than gas money to get it home. 8-[

Other niceities found so far include a K&N element in the stock airbox, Accel coils and a balance tube for the air forks. Closer examination of the baffle in the muffler shows that it is not a straight-through design like the MAC "silencer" we have on the 650. All the exhaust is directed down the narrower perforated tube in the middle, but there is a solid disk in the middle of that tube, forcing all the exhaust to go through the perforations, into the outer chamber, then back through the rear set of perforations and out the end of the muffler. I can't wait to hear this thing run properly.

Special 850

Special 850

I think the "Special 850" would be from a Yamaha 850 Special which is a triple from the mid 80s, which I have only seen pictures of in old magazine ads. Dont specifiaclly know what year, so is that close enough for a prize? You did say there was a prize, right?

About the "GS850" emblem (without the G, without the L): I say 78 or 79 only because both years are listed for 850G in the model chart elsewhere here on GSR. I do know of the 79s, I personally dont know of 78s, maybe 78s were not in US. And I do know that the 79 850G had the emblem that just said "GS850".

Close. REAL close.

Yes, it is from a Yamaha 850 Special. However, it was only made in '80 and '81. Yamaha came out with a 750 triple in '76. It lasted with only a few changes until '79, then they bored it out a bit to make it 850 in '80. The 850 only lasted two years.

Prize? I don't remember mentioning anything about a prize. When I was in school, there were no prizes for pop quizzes. Closest I can do is to give you a (barely) passing grade. You got the make and model, and were close on the year. 8-[

considering how much they cost, you must have practically got the bike for free!!!
Close, but not quite. I did a search of the on-line suppliers that I have bookmarked.

Parts-N-More 65.00
Flatout 96.27
Babbits 98.34
Bike Bandit 111.86
Alpha Motorsports 131.31

I was not aware of the obvious gold content in the diaphragms. I knew they weren't cheap, but I just got diaphragms for my son's Venture Royale, and they were only 57.00 each.

just to add a bit - i had one of those triples, 750, and it was manufactured in '80
also, even though identical to "special" mine had the emblems reading "us custom" in colors of usa flag
the speedo was still in kms not miles
