A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

on a 1982 gs550m, will a broken mechanical advance cause the bike to idle roughly and not throttle up?

What do you mean by "broken"? The advance mechanism is very robust unless you crashed the bike and hit the rotor.

Yes, maximum advance is 32 deg BTDC and advance at idle is about 10 deg (if I remember correctly), so the bike should barely run at all with an inoperative advance unit.

Great! I was hoping thats all it was. not the ignitor box again!:dancing: Ive got an advance on the way from ebay. One off of a 1981 GS550L should work fine on mine shouldnt it?

at first it was spring loaded and now it spins freely

It sounds like you have either broken springs, not hooked up springs, or you have installed the advance unit without it being correctly set into the splines.

Earl

I agree with Earl, most likely something wrong with the springs. Pull off the advance and see what's wrong. Chances are you will be up and running pretty quickly.

Theres a little metal thing that broke off of the shaft i believe. It just spins on the shaft. Doesnt open the springs and it doesnt get locked in.

The rotor has notches that need to fit down over some tabs on the advance weights. If you lift up on the rotor and pull it out of the tabs, the springs on the weights move the weights inward and make it difficult to get the rotor back down. It's hard to describe but easy to figure out once you see it.

Got a digital camera? I've never seen a broken mechanical advance. Make my life complete.

Looks like the rotor has broken loose. Can you pull it off the top?

It wont come off. isnt the rotor supposed to lock in though not just spin all the way around? I think the little metal tab that lets it do that broke off.

Was there a rotor with the advance you bought? It locks into the notches on the pivots.
What year 550 is the new advance coming from?

That's a different looking rotor than used with the crank trigger plate I sent you.
I wonder what the difference is and will the 550 rotor trigger the signal.
