    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Ok. I have a few questions. But first, let me explain myself. I started riding not much more than a year ago, and to tell the truth, I know a whole lotta nothin? about motorcycles. So I thought it would be a good idea to buy a low price, old junker, tear it down, and then build it back up again. (With a little help of course) And in the process, learn a thing or two. Anyway? There is a GS1100GL (Cruiser) for sale that is a little out of my price range for this little experiment of mine. But I may buy it if? now for the questions?
Can I put the full fairings and hard bags on the cruiser model and make it a touring bike?
I would love to have a full sized touring bike.
And what years and models are combatable with this one? I.e. seat, tank, engine parts.

P.s. This is the best site I?ve seen centered around one kind of bike. With all the information and helpful tips, I?ve been looking almost exclusively for a GS. Not to mention, they?re pretty cool bikes.
 
It's imperative that you mention the model year of this GS1100GL. Always do so.

OK. The 1983 model you refer to is a GS1100GLD. "G" is for shaft-driven. "L" is for the cruiser model, as opposed to the standard model. "D" is for 1983.

The "L" model will make a good touring bike, but you should consider its drawbacks. The fuel tank on "L" model bikes is smaller than that on the standard model. The seat is a stepped seat, rather narrow, and not very conducive to long-distance days on the bike. The handlebars are the pull-back bars that place your wrist at an awkward angle. After many miles on the saddle, you won't be very comfortable. This is, of course, a matter of opinion, and many "L" model owners may well refute me on this.

A 1982 or 1983 GS1100GL, or a 1982 or 83 GS850GL will have many parts that will interchange with this bike. The frame and engine are identical to those on the standard models. Earlier model 850's won't have that many interchangeable parts.

I know I'm biased in favor of the standard GS****G models as opposed to the "L" models. The standard models lend themselves to serious traveling to a higher degree than the "L" models.

Yes, you can add fairing, trunk, saddlebags, casesavers, etc., with no problem to this "L" model. If it's a good buy, get it and modify it to your tastes and preferences. You can find, for example, a decent Vetter fairing and mounting hardware on eBay, very easily and economically.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that, for long-distance travel, a GS1100GK is the way to go. A great factory fairing/lowers, trunk, bags, casesavers, all standard equipment that fits well and is all locked with the same ignition key. Good factory package.

I don't know if the larger tank off the standard GS1100G will fit the "L" model. I don't think it will, but I may be wrong. Perhaps someone else here can answer that question.

The tanks off 1982 or 83 GS850G's, GS1100G's, or GS1100GK's are interchangeable. Color is the only difference among them.

I'm gonna be real unpopular with theis response.. But for a full dress touring bike it's real tough to beat a Honda Goldwing. They're super dependable, water cooled and their are tons of them on the road. I now have a GS850 and used to have a GS1100E that I had full dressed and for touring would go for a wing anyday.. However for just having fun the GS1100 was the way to go. Also, since you're new to biking, you may just want to take your time looking to pick up something already dressed.. Either way,, have fun with it.. Yes, this web site is very cool.. Joe
 
You're not going to be unpopular with me. I agree that the Gold Wing is a superb touring bike, particularly since the factory-accessorized GL1100 Interstate came out in 1980.

There's a GS1100GK, the factory-equipped tourer, available on eBay. Go to eBay motors and search for Suzuki. The owner has a $1500 reserve. Go buy it. It's a wonderful bike. I know -- I own one.

I will have to 2nd this with Nick, I own an 83 GK and love it also.........
