What year katana is this and does it have the same exhaust port spacing as my 1982 GS1100e? I want this exhaust in black but they say it only comes in chrome for the gs1100e, but i thought the katanas are very similar in engine and frame so there was a posibility i could order the exhaust for the katana in black and mount it on my 82 gs1100e. Thanks for the help

IIRC, The mounting point at the back for the Kats is different, you would have to modify.

It's hard to tell what year Kat that is due to all the mods.

It's right on the steering head

If it's a US model, the 81 will be a 1000 and the engine serial number will show that

All the others were 1100s

Isnt the 1000 an 82, because I have an 83 1100 ? I wasnt aware of a US 81 1000 Katana, maybe built in late 81 but not titled . That picture almost looks like someone welded a glass pak car muffler on an old pipe. I bought a 73 Z1 with a pipe modded like that. If not what make is it ? Always willing to learn.

What year Kat?

It is hard to tell the precise year with any certainty from a picture of a modified and painted Kat. The fins were options in the US, and they'll mount to either 82 or 83 (and they are still available from Suzuki.)

The only clue I see are the footpegs - they're the aluminum pegs used in 83 as opposed to the steel pegs used in 82. (But of course, they're lighter and could have been swapped out.)
If the speedo is the 150 mph variety, it's another clue pointing to 83. (82 had the 85 mph speedo, again could be swapped out.)
You can look at the jugs, and see if the displacement reads 998 or 1074 (998 is an 82 1000SZ engine, 1074 or 1075 is 83 1100 engine - which can be swapped too.)

Dispite claims otherwise, there was never an official 1981 model, they are 1982 1000S"Z" in the states. and 1000SZ or 1100SZ everywhere else (or 1100SXZ if you're a lucky Aussie or South African with a wire wheel Kat!) Suzuki did make 83 models, 84 and more, but only 82 and 83 were imported to the US or Canada.

There is only one way to tell for sure and that's the VIN on the bike (and not necessarily the one on the title);
-if it reads JS1GT72A_C210xxxx, it's 82 1000SZ. (the space between A and C is a check digit)
-if it reads JS1GU72A_D210xxxx, it's 83 1100SD.

In terms of the heads, and exhaust port - the 1000 is the exact same distance between the ports as the 1100 (80, 81, 82, 83. even 84 & 85 1150s). As Gearhead correctly pointed out, the rear exhaust mounting bracket for Kats is in a different location than the 1100E, Kats being slightly further back than E models. But they'll work fine on the front end, just need to realign the rear hangar

Sweet Kat by the way - looks a lot like the Yosh 1135 Kat....

Appears to be a Marving system...European manufacturer.:-k

On the E bikes, the footpegs are not readily or easily interchanged, due to differences in mounting points on the frames....not sure about the Kats. But, having said that, it probably wouldn't stop this builder, given the amount of trickery on display here. If one went to all the trouble though, it would be surprising if they didn't just use late-model pegs, in keeping with the other mods.:-k

Yes it's a Marving exhaust.
I would not recommend as it's very noisy...
As for the bike's year, I would say 1982 ( SZ model) as the carbs are not painted black but of course the PO might have taken the paint off...

Dont know about in the US but the frame there is an 82 model as the front mount bolts go through it where on the 83 the bolts are threaded on the inside.
