    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

The left engine cover is cracked and leaking oil, is there oil behind it, or is it like a car where the flywheel and starter are dry??

if it is leaking there is oil :-k................ Hope this helps :rolleyes:
 
The alternator and starter clutch assembly are under the engine cover you are possibly talking about. There is definitely oil in there. The case isn't difficult to replace or repair. A bit different to a car though.

What bike are we talking about? There might be a manual for it on my website. Check out the stator replacement guide to see what's under the left engine cover.

There's oil but not a lot. With the bike on the center stand, you can take off the cover and hardly lose any. Better yet, put a 1" thick plank under one foot of the centerstand so the bike leans slightly toward the right side and it's even better.
 
Sorry its an 82 gs1100 shaft drive, I knew that was going to be a stupid question but figured there would either be all the oil or dry:) I can weld it no problem just wanted to be prepared for a leaking internal seal of some kind. I have dropped it first little test drive around the shop lot after buying it, I grabbed the front brakes and found the brake pads were down to the metal but this was a crack or something covered in a lot of JB weld from previous owner...well if I dont have to change all the oil that makes it easy enough Thanks fellas:D
 
Ok so its not that easy...What is pulling the left cover to the engine? I can pull it out enough to get my fingers between but it just snaps back against the engine when I let go.
 
That would be the magnets that are part of the alternator. They also are part of the flywheel.

Just keep pulling, but be prepared, when the magnetism subsides, there isn't much to hold it. You will need to remove the stator wires to make things easier. Pull the starter cover off, you will find the wires routed around the starter.

The starter idler gear may also drop out, that's not a problem, just be ready for it.

And the two idler gear washers - notorious for being overlooked

What Steve is saying is that the cover will be very hard to pull off for the 1st few inches, the POP, it comes right off. Don't smack yourself in the face, or knee or whatever when it comes off
 
Hahaha yea I will keep my face away from it, I have hit my self like that MANY MANY times!!!! I think I'm getting it, I am just so unfamiliar with these, I feel like I'm 15 again workin on my first car.

I downloaded a manual but now I can't find where I copied it to, I will find it and read before I bug u guys and gals with trivial stuff like this^o

Hmmm only found one washer...hope if there was another it didn't fall down in the motor. BUT...I got it welded up and filed smooth...I should polish it before I reassemble:D
