A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I am about to replace my back tire and I want to repaint the black. I have a 83 GS1100L. Does anyone know if the paint was shiny, satin or flat black when it was new. The front has a satin finish to it but that could be from 23 years of age.

I would say the original color was a satin dark charcoal. Very thin paint.
I re-did my wheels on my '79 GS1000E. I had the center areas (that were dark) powdercoated gloss black and the outer areas and the sides of the spokes highly polished. Really gives the bike some flash in my opinion. If you want to see them up close, go to my website and browse my photo secton. Just click the WWW symbol below. :)

I was thinking about shiny black also. I did not see the WWW at the bottom of your reply. Repost if you would so I can see yours.

The www is in the bar below your signature line. Next to the PM and Profile buttons.

See the WWW symbol with the little house, at the bottom of my post?
Paint will chip in my opinion. Powdercoating is a lot tougher. You'll have to remove the bearings to powdercoat. Either way, you can still see what it looks like. The wheels actually look better in person. Didn't cost that much. To polish off the original machined finish, then mask and powdercoat, was around $140/ea. I keep the finish with drill mounted buffs.

Da I should have seen it before. I looked at your bike Looks great. How did you find a place to powercoat your wheels. I'm in Texas and I have tried to find some one near by but can not find a place.

My work takes me all over the So.Cal area. I saw some places just driving around. I went in and asked to see their work. :)

I am in Lufkin about 120 miles north of Houston on Hwy 59. I think I have decided to go with the Gloss Black with a clear on top.

We haven't decided yet. Watch the GS meetingplace forum for an announcement. It should be posted in a month or two. We will try to pick a date that is convenient for everyone interested, so it takes a while to hammer out the details...

Good luck with the wheels. 8)

wheel refurb

wheel refurb

hi all, i have just finished my wheels. i am doing a 1000s back to showroom condition. i think Keiths bike looks awesome but i needed an origional look. i had the wheels blasted to remove powder coat, then i had paint mixed to the origional colour via photos. i sprayed the wheels and then spent approx 10hrs with a flap wheel and polishing mops to finish the job off.total cost inc made up aerosol 43quid. thats approx $90 and a lot of hard work. the wheels look like they have come out the crate. as i keep saying, when the bike is finished, all will be revealed step by step with help from Robinjo and his web site.

You don't have to use those silly words unless you wear your hat backwards, listen to rap, and ride a skateboard.
I refuse. [-X

I finished the rear wheel it is not show room quality but it does look better than before. Here are some PICs to see the before and after. I also refinsihed the shaft drive side of the swing arm.

I used a black primer and then I had a can of flat black so I used it and then I sprayed clear on top of the falt balck paint. I think it turned aout pertty good for Arosal can paint. I do not sand and buff.
