Where to buy a Ricks stator

Hey all. You would think this would be a redundant question considering the fact that there is a search function, but alas I have become tired of hunting for such a simple question, at least what 'I' think is a simple question. I need a Ricks stator for a 79' 850G..where is everyone buying these from?? I did check out Z1 but they don't say who makes their stators. Motorcycle superstore has a confirmed 'Ricks' but it's for a GS1000 not the 850 and I'm not 'exactly' sure if they are the exact same fit. Oh, and if someone is bored they can explain the difference between the 12 pole and 18 pole stators to be as well.

Well, uh, the 12 pole stators have 12 poles, and the 18 pole stators have 18... and they're not interchangeable. The rotors have a different number and arrangement of magnetic poles.

12 pole stators have to be rebuilt based on original cores -- for whatever reason, no one seems to make new cores for these.

The GS1000 stator does not interchange with the GS850 stator.

However, you can switch a 1979 GS850 to an 18 pole stator if you also switch to the rotor from a 1980-83 GS850G/GL. (The stator cover is the same.) Of course, I'd also upgrade the regulator/rectifier, inspect/clean/repair all the wiring, and install an electronic ignition as well.

You gain a bit of electrical capacity, and it's much easier and cheaper to find stators, since this stator was used in lots of bikes. For example, my '83 GS850G is currently wearing a stator from a 2001 GS500.

Would you settle for a good used stator if I haven't already thrown it out?

I've got a used one that tested ok but really I'd like to put a new one in there. The reg/rec is toast so I'm also going to put in a new SH-775. Thanks for the reminder on the 12 VS 18 Brian.

if you are putting in the SH775 (confirmed as a true series regulator, yes?), consider putting in a high-output stator. You should gain a few amperes more capacity with the SH775, and if you are farkling the 850 for your longer trips, you'll appreciate the extra power. I believe, from the reading I have done on here, that the Electrosport falls into this category (disclaimer- I have no personal stake in Electrosport).

Have you thought about the CalTric stators? Good price point at $60.00 and I believe at least one of the regulars on here (Steve? BassCliff?) have that setup.

That would be BassCliff, not me. :o

I just looked at the Caltric site, saw nothing that applied to our bikes.
Not sure where BassCliff got his.

A couple of years ago, when I was shoping for a stator, I found that Rick's stators were cheaper on E-bay than directly from Rick's. Go figure? I saw multiple ads and they were all marked Rick's stators. I think the setup Posplayer is recomending now is a Series R&R with and Electrosport stator. He has thread links listed on his posts.

You know, I really don't know that much about the stators as I've never had to buy a new one before, amazingly enough with all the bikes that have come thru the shed. I'm helping out a local fella I know with his 850 (my old blue bike I sold to him a few years ago) that died. The stator is testing ok still but I do see a couple of 'crispy' spots on it so I suggested to him to replace the stator. The reg/rec is fried, which kind of tics me off since I paid $100 for the only 5 yrs ago. Any who, I thought might as well put in the SH-775 that everyone is suggesting and put in a new stator at the same time. The bike already has the Dyna ignition. I forgot the old 850 has the harder to find 12 pole stator. I know I could upgrade the whole thing but that just seems like more parts and more time. I'm hoping to just be able to find a new 12 pole...not as easy as the 18 that's for sure. I've never heard of the CalTric, I checked their website and they don't go back to 79'.

I thought I had read too many problems with Electrosport stators failing, shorting out? ahh..more reading...the R/R's could not handle the out put leading to failure of the stator. So..it seems Electrosport is just fine as long as you upgrade the R/R.

IIRC, the problem had more to do with ES stators when used with the shunt type R/R.
The theory went something like this: because the ES stator produced more output, there was more shunting to ground (heat to the stator), which in turn caused the stators to prematurely croak. Since the series R/R (SH775) doesn't shunt to ground, the extra output doesn't create the same heat problem which should keep the ES stator from croaking early.

If you are going to a series RR I would be comfortable putting the tested good 2nd hand unit in... then look out for a spare to keep on the "fedex overnight" table when going on long trips (I leave spares out for my wife so I can say... Fedex that funny round thing on the table etc). :)

When you think about it you are fitting the Series RR to take the strain off the stator so the stator should not really break down from this point forward.... Of course there is always Murphy's law!

Hey can someone help me out here. For the life of me I can not nail down a SH-775 reg/rec on line. I've been hunting on Polaris sites left and right but cannot find that specific one. Not on ebay, now where. Frustration has gotten the better of me..thanks.

ES does apparently use different suppliers to produce stators and some models seem to have less than the best workmanship. At least that has been the complaints. Not sure if it has lead to any failures unless there was obvious interference on installation. In my experience, the GS1100e stators have always seemed to be of high quality and certainly worth the possible workmanship risks for the increased low RPM power gains(when using Series R/R's).

Just another thought to throw out there: $195 is a hell of a lot of money to just have a stator re-wound.

Isn't there anyone in Canada who can re-wind stators? I know there are a couple of other sources to have stators re-wound here in the states for much more reasonable amounts of money ($60 to $100 is what I've seen).

Besides, a 12-pole stator is going to be a lot easier to re-wind than an 18 pole stator.

I'm curious

Is it possible to update the 1979 to 1980/1981 spec by changing out the rotor as well?
