A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey Everyone,

having a problem with my gs that is rather frustrating due to the lack of frequency.

Bike: 1980 GS550E
Charging system nice and healthy. Running a honda R/R. Stock Stator. Stock coils.

The past 2 times i have ridden this bike, it has cut out on me. Both after 45+ minutes of riding. It'll suddenly loose all spark to all 4 cylinders. but retain full power to everything. Headlight, starter, gauges etc.

After a few seconds/minutes, i can thumb the starter and she'll fire right back to life. Both times I rode it 30+ minutes home. I can't do diagnosis on her because it's so intermentent.

It's not a fuel issue, it's definently spark related due to how sudden it occurs.

It's not the ignition switch because i still have power to the starter. Kickstarter switch is permently hotwired. The only other 2 things I can think of is kill switch and the ignitor. Kill switch is in good shape. Could this be an ignitor issue?

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

"Kickstarter switch"?

Please elaborate.

You are right. Based on your description, it might be an ignitor, or at least one of the connections in the ignitor circuit. If it was a fuse, you would not be able to use the electric starter. However, it could be a fuse that has come loose internally, and looks good. Try changing the ignition fuse. If it still happens, check the connectors for the ignitor and the pickup sensors on the end of the crank. If all those are good, it might be the ignitor, but there are also tests you can do to test it, they are outlined in your service manual.
