A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

My 1981 GS 750 Ex is due for an new chain and some new sprocets. I went to bikebandit.com to do some pricing and was rather thoughly overwhelmed. All the different brands and tooth ratios. What do the different tooth ratios do for you? I'm looking a dependable brand too. This is my first time buying any of this stuff. Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.

No matter what, get an O RING or X RING chain! Steel sprockets in the rear are heavier than aluminum but will last LOTS longer. A 530 conversion kit with something in the area of 3 teeth BIGGER in the rear in gear ratio will make a good difference in accelleration. If your stock gearing with the 630 is 15/45 you will need to go something like 17/51 to get the same ratio gearing & have clearance for the smaller diameter 530 sprockets. Confused yet?!! LOL!!! If it were mine & it ISN'T a totally FREEWAY bike, IF the stock gearing were 15/45 (3.0 to 1), try a 530 conversion with 17/54 sprockets to have better take off! Try that! Good luck whatever you decide, Ray.

Owner's manual for your bike (as mine) calls for either a DAIDO DID630V or a TAKASAGO RK630SO (so use those numbers as equals). Recommends inspect every 3500mi or 12mo, clean with kerosene every 600mi and lube. With .8 - 1.2" slack to bottom of chain 1/2 way between sprockets when properly adjusted.

I think it's significant there is no recommended replacement time/miles for the chain or sprockets. Just check for wear/rust when you clean/lube it. I avoid dirt roads for good reason - I don't like cleaning the chain frequently and they aren't cheap.

15t front, 41t rear. Price ranges from ($56BB) to ($33Z1) Chain I don't remember links number (count them) but $194 BB and $167Kirk but you can't use the rivet style unless you have the riveter and the links cost $6 either way. Believe there is one washer shim in front for a buck too? Honestly I don't know if you save much doing this yourself? Hour's labor in the shop? I would check prices around town first.

I called Z1enterprises and they were very helpfull. Thanks for all of your input:-D.

As Nessism points out the 630 is considered obsolete by many in the bike world for various reasons however, industry still use 630. I buy my 630 O Ring chain from a Company called Tsubaki. The chain is made in Japan and is very good quality, got 45,000km out of the last one. I use genuine sprockets front and rear as I get far more mileage out of them than aftermarket items. Each to their own I guess, cheers.
