Who cleans carbs?

Woodsie, judging by your past love for GS's, and you have had severall of them , and will most likely aqquire more in the future, I would suggest you take the initive to teach yourself how to rebuild VM's and CV carbs. You will save yourself a hefty amount of cash over the long term. 90% of the GS's (or any 25 year old bike) usually the #1 issue is ill running stemming from dirty carbs, now this issue is even more pronounced by the new E10 fuel.
if you'd read, it's not so much that he is afraid to rebuild the carbs, but he has nowhere he can dip them without harm to people or animals.

Thats my problem also woodsietx, I have nothing and am in the same boat, I dont even have a room full of puppies. So I feel your pain. I'm working on painting out side in my back yard and have done my painting and priming on the tailgate of my old S10 p/u. Many apologize if I was out of place, I offer my most humble apologize. Good luck, have a great day.
And yes my spelling steenks.

Sachsaca, there was never any offense taken. I chuckle every time someone makes that typo. I was called Woodsie as a teen so it seems an appropriate handle now.

Road_clam is exactly right when he says

I have every intention of learning how when my situation changes.

Somewhere out there is an 82 or 83 GS1100E with my name on it. I just haven't found it yet.

An update on the work, I've had some offers to do the work for a fee, a coach and Griffin's amazing offer of free labor. Each offer has different but valid merits. Decisions ...

Even my girlfriend is heaping "abuse" on me. She doesn't live here and next plans to visit in Dec. I told her I will have rear pegs on the bike by then so we could go riding. Her reply, "but that would mean it would have to be running!" What can a man do?

Dunk them in the carb cleaner outside, pop the lid on, take the can outside when the alloted time is up, remove carb and put next carb in the can...
rinse each cleaned carb in a bucket filled with hot water and build them up on your kitchen table. :D

Again, I appreciate the advice but ...

I don't live in my own home and the bike is not in my own garage. I don't know anyone within 200 miles who has a place I can tear a bike down and leave it set while I poke at repairs on the weekend. Even so, I will find a way to get this thing running the right way, as the regular members of the site insist I should. I have bought the parts and tools to do my own valves. I have a copy of the Stator papers next to the bike. I ordered a CarbTune today, knowing that I have to do a vacuum synch after my carbs come back. I bought a hand impact driver on the way home. The list goes on. I just can't work with sloshy, smelly chemicals in any quantity no matter how many times it's suggested.

Believe me, I am very sensitive about not wanting to appear ungrateful for advice or disrespectful to those who give it. This web site is a godsend to someone like myself who is basically a beginner with respect to properly caring for my bike.

Why do I care and spend time commenting? Because I plan to be on this site for a long time to come and I want the respect of the senior members. Every time I receive advice to do something they believe I can do but I insist I can't, I look like a fool and an ass. I'm not either.

Maybe this discussion should be a new thread?

Woodsie

Yes I did. Many thanks. I'm still trying to decide what to do. I am going to pull the carbs this week hopefully.

Woodsie

From what I have read so far I agree with Woodsie that he should have them done. Seems to me I ran across a place in Texas that would completely refurbish a set of carbs for around 360 for VM and a bit more for CV carbs. Have you run across them in your search of the internet? I think I just did a simple google search for VM carburetor or soething like that

If I EVER suggested redoing my carbs on the kitchen table I am sure the carving knife would come out!! :)

There is a place here in Dallas that will do them for $350. A coworker had the ones for his 72 Honda 750 done. I can get the name if you like. I am willing to let you come up here and do them if you are not to far away. I prefer not to work on anything other than my own. Don't want to screw up someone else's stuff. There is absolutely no way you could make my garage any more messy than it is.

I'm sure RustyBronco had his tongue in his cheek when he suggested that. ;)

Because of an as yet unresolved separation, I stay with my mom. She doesn't like clutter on the floor; you can only imagine how she'd react to carb dip in the bathtub. :D

Another sucky fact of life I face.

Woodsie

It's the location I have to work on it that's the problem. The bike is in a garage that has been turned into a kennel for 22 or 23 Great Dane puppies. I CANNOT do any chemical stuff inside, Plus it's not a proper shop. To do my gas tank cleaning, I had to set up a table in the driveway to work on.

I'm sure RustyBronco had his tongue in his cheek when he suggested that. ;)
The point I'm trying to make is, where there is a will there is a way.

Have you ever tried to overhaul a ford 8" rear axle at the side of the road? I have and
you can too! (in reality, it was a case replacement because I ripped the pinion out of it :) )

good luck and all the best with your project.

My last chance to ask advice about removing carburetors. In the AM, they're coming off.

Duneage recommended using silicon lube on the boots, I have some. He suggested pulling them out the left side. I have a handheld impact, I have read notes about removing the airbox screws... I even remember a throttle cable tip involving turning the throttle open after the carbs are loose. My laptop will be there with a copy of the shop manual open.

Anything else I should look for or do?

I realize that to most of you this is SOP as a GS owner but I've never done this much work by myself to one of my bikes. I appreciate your patience with the posts.

Woodsie

Think I'm bad now, wait until I have to get it back together. :p

Hi,

You are going to have so much fun! Even if you don't actually take all of your carbs apart you'll derive great satisfaction wrenching on your bike.

My laptop will be there with a copy of the shop manual open.

I usually just print out the pages I need instead of taking one of my computers to the garage. I don't like getting greasy fingerprints on the keyboard and screen.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Another update to the carburetor saga.

The carbs are off. It turned out much easier than I hoped only because of what I've read on here. I have a series of pictures I'll get up into another album. I may have screwed up the choke and found an unknown washer/spacer. I ask about those issues in another thread.

I can see where carb #1 has definite signs of rust on the butterfly where the others don't. Other than that the carbs look pretty clean. All of the boots on both sides of the carb are in good shape as well. I think from their condition, I won't need to replace any.

Album here:
http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/album.php?albumid=598

The oil fill cap gasket is bad. I also could not get the oil sending unti bolt out. I didn't want to do anything to damage it. The new petcock is holding fuel.

The engine looks nice because it has been painted. I hope this doesn't mean the paint covered up a serious leak. There's overspray on the downtubes in front of the filter cover. The stator cover has been off because the OEM screws have been replaced with little black hex heads.

Basscliff, you certainly are right about doing any wrenching at all changing how one feels about the bike. I'm learning new things about it every time I work on it. Can't wait to ride it soon.

Woodsie

Oh my goodness Mr. Woodsietx, I owe you such an apology, I am so so so so so so so sorry, I just got back to this post and saw my error in your name. I offer my most sincere apologies, dude I would never do that, holy cow I just saw it how I butchered your name, I am so sorry. I am giving this apology in public since it was seemed to be a public slam, I don't do that, especially to a person whom I have never met. Again I am very sorry...

I was never upset. You're not the first. I just laugh at it now.

Woodsie

Thanks, good for you but that would be really uncool. Hows the bike?

That looks like the rear fuel tank mounting grommet. one that goes between the bolt and the tank, or the tank and the frame.
it is number 11 or 12 in this drawing.
