    A note to new registrants...
All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I just bought the bike and had it in the shop for 2 MONTHS. The shop sent me on my way, but I found out on the way home that the bike would not idle w/o stalling. I don't want to take it back to the shop that worked on it for several reasons: 1. far from home 2. didn't figure it out in 2 months, etc.

I called one shop and they didn't think anyone around would work on a bike as old as mine - 83.

I am quite confident its a carb problem, and I'm considering on tackling it myself. I've never done work on a bike before, but have some experience working on cars. I am thinking of buying a rebuilt carb online. Will I be in over my head? Do you think this is actually the issue?

Thanks

Rebuilding these carbs is NOT HARD. Yes, I was intimidated at first. There are FOUR of them, and id never messed with them before. But if you FOLLOW THE TUTORIAL here on the home page of the GSR, it is explained in EXCELLENT detail, start to finish. It will go along way in helping you understand how your carbs work, and if you are going to own one of these, you'd better get a grasp on at least being able to do the regular maintenence items on it, cos a shop wont, and if you find one that does, they're gonna charge you ALOT to do a crappy job.

You'll need to get your intake boot and carburetor ORINGS from here:
www.cycleorings.com

READ THAT SITE THOROUGHLY TO ASSURE YOU GET THE THINGS YOU NEED

The carb rebuild guides are here:

http://www.thegsresources.com/gs_carbrebuild.htm

AGAIN: READ AND FOLLOW EXACTLY. DO NOT CUT CORNERS or you will have to likely do it again...seriously.

What he said....;)

And welcome!!

Now how about some info....year, model and your location.

OH! And extra points for pictures....:D

Thanks for the confidence boost! I am from Somerville, MA - The bike I just bought is a 1983 gs550. I don't have any pictures yet.

It's my first bike, so I'm really excited to get it running well. I'm itching to get back on the road.

Thanks again
