Tried using the search but didn't come up with anything that answered my ?.
Trying to hook the wiring back up on my bike and having some problems (of course).:? I got it all hooked up and gave it a try and the stator starts spinnning. Even with the kill switch set to off it still moves. When I turn the turns or high beam on it spins more. Any one have any ideas what is going on?
I've been dying to get this going after a long MN winter. This is on a GS650GLZ. Anyone else have the same bike and have some pics of your wiring harness. THanks in advance.

Hi Mr. silverkrown,

There are 650 wiring diagrams on my website. Help yourself. Good luck. Keep us informed.

Thank you for your indulgence,

I know. I actually printed it off today. Thank you for that. It made it a lot easier having the color copy. I actually sent a fellow GS owner to your site on the Jockey Journal. Even with the wiring diagram I am at a loss as to why the stator would start turning when I turn the ignition key. Doesn't make sense to me. If any one with a GS650 can post some pics of your wiring that would maybe help too. Thanks..

Hi Mr. silverkrown,

It sounds as if you've wired your solenoid to the ignition switch instead of to the starter switch. (You mean your starter spins, not your stator, right?) Is your bike actually cranking over, or is the starter just spinning?

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

The stator is actually spinning. I turn the key and I can hear it start moving.
Moves faster when I turn on the highbeams or turn signals. When I actually have it turned to run and press the start button I can hear the starter and stator just spin.
Thanks

I went through all my wiring, cleaning contacts, fixing, grounds, the works a week or so back. Can you post some pics of how yours are and maybe I can compare. I just put the bike back together so dont really want to pull the tank again, but if needed I could take some pictures of it... though Im not sure that would help.

Mine is a 83, gs650 GL

That would totally help. I should have taken more pictures of it before I disassembled it. I'll take some pics of it when I get home and send them to you so we can compare.

Thanks

Trying to understand it right, its not the starter motor but the stator spinning, so when the battery has any draw on it its pulling through the rectifier and spinning the stator... just a guess but did you check the main grounds under the battery? Mine where really corroded cause the old battery didnt have the vent tube and leaked all down the side. Perhaps if the battery ground and the stator line are connected, but not grounded it could cause that.

My stator doesn't spin

My stator doesn't spin

Hi Mr. slverkrown,

I'm a little confused. I don't think your stator is spinning because it is bolted to the inside of left side engine cover. See below:

DSCF2513.jpg

There is a magnetic rotor that spins around the stator to induce electricity but that spins only when the engine is running.

If I may speculate, perhaps you've got a bad clutch on your starter and you've accidentally wired it both to the ignition switch and the starter switch. You hear the starter spinning when you turn on the ignition switch. When you turn on lights or press the starter button it spins faster because it is drawing more current. This is a total, wild guess because I can't see your wiring. But I'm reasonably sure that your stator is not spinning. Keep us informed.

Feel free to stop by my website and check out all of the electrical and charging system guides. There are no ignition-specific files but there are lots of pictures about wiring up the stator, regulator/rectifier and its ground wire, etc. It might help.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Yes you are correct. The stator itself isn't really spinning. Sorry thats from my lack of understanding how the stator works. The gears or something in that side of the case of the engine spins. I'll go out and take some pictures of my wiring rats nest and maybe that will help.

Thanks

The only thing that could possibly be spinning would be your starter. It's the only thing on your bike that has a motor (besides the engine, of course).

I took some pics and added some comments to them. Hopefully this will help.
I installed a speedometer from MikesXS. You can see the wiring in some of the pics. Thanks

I just hooked it up again and got down close and you guys were right it is the starter. What would make that start running. Maybe someone already answered that. I'll re-read what everyone has said.

Woah!. I attached the extra ground wire I had to the battery and connected
it to the seat mount (maybe this wasn't actually grounded). Turned the key
and the starter didn't seem to be spinning. When I tried to start it a big poof of smoke came off the ground wire. It totally fried it. Is this becuase it wasn't fully grounded?

Made some progress today. Headlight on and indicator works for highbeam.
Put a new turn signal relay and they actually flash now, although the indicator
light only shows for one of them (I think I know what is causing this. Read some other posts about the MikeXS guages. Pulled in the clutch and hit the starter. Made the proper starting sound, probably would have started if I had the tank and carbs on.
So here's the new problem. When I pull the clutch in the engine tries to start
without me even pushing the start button. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

Also anyone who has installed the speedo from MikeXS. I can't get the Neutral
indicator or oil indicator to work. It's seems like maybe it's not grounded or something.

Thanks for any help someone may have.
