    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey guys, ive got a 78 GS1000E I recently acquired that needs some work. I bought a new battery and hooked it up only to find no power anywhere on tbe bike. I load tested the battery and everything is fine there. I checked the connections at the battery. On + there's one wire going to solenoid and on (-) there are two wires one grounding to the frame and rhe other to the fuse block on the left side. I checked all the fuses and they're all good and showing continuity with my multimeter. Is there a wire missing on the hot side? How does power get to the kill switch and starter button as well as lights?
 
I am guessing that the second wire on the negative terminal might need to be moved to the positive terminal. :-k

However, before doing that and possibly blowing something up, please consult the wiring diagram in your service manual to be sure.

Manual is in the mail...i just couldnt help but jump right in.
 
The heavy gauge red wire to the solenoid and one black and one brown on the negative side

While the factory did a wonderful job of color-coordinating all the wires, any previous owner(s) of the bike were likely not so considerate.
Besides, electrons are color-blind and simply don't care what color the wire is. :-\\\

Thanks guys. Ill skim over the wiring a bit closer this evening with these resources. Hope to figure it out...im anxious hear this thing run
 
+ red from battery should have a tail that goes to fuse block (1) should be a bullet connector from back of f/b thats red and plugged to one of the - blk, swap the red from fuse box up to the + red treminal. :confused:
 
J Bird, I swapped the one from the fuse block. It powers the lights and everything now but they dont go onor off with the switch, cconstantly on. Wont start either. I opened up the kill switch to find the switch not connected but instead they were soldered together. Doesn't make any sense unless they were choking the engine to kill it right?

Thats why we are both here, electrical probs. I can't answer any questions related to that until I correct my own problems, wish I could help. :(
 
You need a multi-meter to trouble shoot what's happening. Are you getting voltage to the fuse box? Are you getting voltage through the ignition switch back to the fuse box? Are you getting voltage to the starter solenoid when you turn on the kill switch and push the starter button while the clutch is pulled in? Notice that in all of these cases you need to be able to measure the voltage at the terminal point. These bikes have a a lot of connectors and switches that can be quite corroded up.
