won't go into first

On a 7 day trip in bc and yesterday I couldn't get the 1100 into first gear. All the other gears are fine, shifts normally. But when down shifting it will only go to neutral. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Trevor

shifting linkage is wore out and needs adjusted a little...replaced ect..
either that or some d?bris may be under the shifter shaft(behind the clutch basket).

I can't see it being caused by the shifter mechanism as the bike will shift up and down through all the other gears.

My gut is it's internal. Possibly a bent/damaged shifter fork?

Dunno without touching and disassembling it.

the shifting pawl assembly lets it shift up and down through the gears and goes back to a central position but...
a worn shifter linkage can bind up when trying for 1st gear.

Is the throw length different for first gear than the other gears?

But once you're in neutral the throw should be about the same as the other gears. Don't get me wrong, I think what you are suggesting is the place to start looking into the problem.

Trever, does the bike feel like it's hitting a hard stop when trying to shift into first or does the travel feel like 'normally' ('ish) did?

the ball and socket is usually still good.
the problem is the back side where it is bradded? over get's loose.
you can tig weld them and make them new again but..
you usually loose the rubber boot from the heat.
mcintosh showed me this years ago and would weld these for me on many bikes...some stock and some with air shifters(bike would miss shifts from the slop).

He's on the road somewhere in BC or Alt, so he'll check in when he can

Hey guys, just got home. gonna look for the issue with my shiffting in the am/ Will keep you posted and thanks for the advice.:)

Well I feel more than a little silly but relieved that it was nothing serious.:o
Took the shifter off and fooled with the position a bit and realized that the bike was able to shift into 1st. So not likely internal. When putting the shifter back on it wouldn't shift into 1st again. That is when we realized that the bolt that tightens the shifter to the shifter spine was in upside down.:o So it wasn't tightening the shifter to the shaft at all, it was just there. So what would happen is that the shifter would eventually slip a tooth on the shaft then not allowing the bike to go into first.
So how did the bolt get put in upside down to begin with you ask???
Well when I had my stator fail at the pnw rally when putting it back together after a 5 hour job and a keg of almost free beer beside us I must have put it in backwards from the top instead of the bottom.:o You see there is only a thread on one side of the shifter so if you put it in backwards you won't tighten it.
And to think I rode it for 1200kms before it gave me a problem, then another 2000kms on the trip without 1st gear, loaded two up.
Ok confession over, I feel better now.:)

Ill also confess that booze and wrenching dont go well. Years ago while installing my jet kit in the 1150 while tipping the wine jug, I used the drill bit for opening the airsrew plugs to drill the slides:-&. Oops. Trevor, im glad you're problem was minor.

You are not the first or last to do that.
