Im rebuilding a 1982 Gs650 GL abd I just had the carburetors cleaned because the were completely clogged. When I start the bike, it runs smooth a 1000rpm but when i try to bring it up, it wont go over 5000rpm and if I try to open the throttle more, the bike starts to die. I know it?s probably a fuel problem but I dont know where. Ideas?

thanks!

1. How were the carbs "cleaned"?

2. Do you have the air box installed?

3. Have the valves been adjusted?

.

The carburetors were stripped, the jets, bowls and other conduits were cleaned(I didnt do it a expert did it). The air box is installed in order to accommodate the r/r but we put 4 individual air filter on each carburetors and took the air pipe off so the air box isnt connected to the carburetors. I didnt touch the valves.

I would question your expert on how the "other conduits" were cleaned. These are small passages that can not be cleaned by simply blowing cleaner through them, they need to be SOAKED.

With your individual filters, you will need to re-jet the carbs. Good luck with that project.

Please check valve adjustment.

My Sportster never revved over 6k. :p:p:p
Does a Harley ever rev above 6k? What is the redline?

Not meaning this as a jab at Harley, I'm just curious how high they DO rev.

It'll turn 6k, until it won't! At that point you'll be wanting or wishing you where wearing Kevlar tidy whities.

re-jet the carbs? What does that mean? Im not an expert im just a beginner. And the guy who did my carb cleaning told me he soaked the parts.

You have a lean condition. Meaning your carbs are getting too much air, and not enough fuel. You need to put bigger (likely 2 sizes bigger) main jets in them. Pilot jets up one size, and You will also need to raise your needles up a notch, possibly 2. You may be able to avoid all of that, by hooking your airbox back up to the stock configuration.

So because of my new filters, the engine is getting too much air for the fuel it gets?

That is exactly what is happening. When you add more air, you must add more fuel. And vice versa...

And do you think it will be expensive to change the 4 main jets and pilot jets? I can do that or put back the original filter. Or could I find filters that let in less air than mine?

My Sporty turned 6k a few times. But from 5 to 6k is completely useless.

After I disposed of the stock airbox and installed pods (individual filters), but before I had the carbs rejetted, my bike sputtered and I could barely make it around the block. So I covered up around 90% of the pods with electrical tape and it ran fine.

I probably paid $200 - $300, parts and labor, to have my Suzi jetted on a dynamometer.

Since you are new to this, put the airbox back on
There are no simple solutions to rejetting yourcarbs for pods

Thanks, Rob. I knew they were relatively low-RPM engines, just didn't know what the limit was.

I have a similar situation on my Wing.

It is not (money) expensive for the parts you need to re-jet your carbs. It will cost a lot of hair, and even more frustration to get them dialed in correctly with the pod filters. ESPECIALLY if you don't know what you're doing. The best, easiest, and smartest thing to do, is to put the original airbox back in it. As long as you still have it that is. Tuning for pod filters it very fiddly. You have to get your carbs PERFECT through all of the fuel stages. Do yourself a favor, and save yourself a lot of frustration, put the airbox in it with a new OEM filter.
