A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Won't start hot, loses power, battery won't keep charge

Hey guys! I have a 1978 GS550.

I just bought her a few months ago. I took her for a ride the other day, stopped for gas, and couldn't get her cranked back up. She was running pretty hot. The lights were on, she was trying to turn over, but the engine wouldn't start. I had AAA come by and recharge the battery, and she cranked up after a few tries.

On the ride home, I noticed she was losing power around 5000 rpms, when I slowed at a stop sign, she turned off, and wouldn't crank back up. I had the battery recharged and was able to drive her back home. Same thing happening. It seems like the battery just didn't have enough power to start her back up, but I'm not sure why she quit on me, or why the battery was losing charge.

Honestly, I don't know enough to be able to know what I should look for, and the shops around here won't work on older bikes. I just had the battery replaced, and I was told I should look into new points soon.

Would new points fix this problem? Is this just a hot start issue? Is there something else going on that I should look into?
Any help pointing me in the right direction would be fantastic.

Should also mention, when I took her to the shop for new tires, they also replaced the spark plugs, and checked the compression (compression was fantastic).

You have a charging problem.

You have a bad Stator or a bad R/R.
(actually I think the first gens all have the Rectifier and Regulator as separate units)

You need to go to Basscliffs page, and run some quick electrical tests, you'll need a voltmeter.
