The Yoshimura 4-1 came installed on my newly purchased 82 1100E. Needless to say, the bike is LOUD, due to what looks like a torn baffle.

This is my first expeirence with a 4-1 exhaust. Does anyone recognize this specific yosh exhaust? Here's what I've noted on the condition of the exhaust from what I can see.

1. the end of the baffle looks blown out. see pics.
2. The pipes are scraped an partially flattened underneath, but does not seem to be effecting output, but how the hell would I know
3.A header exhaust bolt is broken and lodged in the header. Because of this the left most bolt on the left pipe (facing the bike), where it meets the header is just not there, there-for the left most pipe is being held on by one bolt... seems rock stable though.
4. She is friggin loud

So, what are my next steps on dealing with these pipes.

Is there a replacement baffle I can find to fit this can?
Should I be worried about the flattened bottom on the pipe, will this effect anything besides giving me more clearance?
Is it worth holding onto this yosh or just start thinking about a replacement?

thanks

Not sure of the exact model but it seems to be a period piece. The later Yosh pipes generally had 2" midpipes. Yours looks to have a midpipe diameter about the same as Kerkers from the '80s. If the pipes aren't too hammered they should flow well enough.

That's Hoomgar's bike isn't it?

Not hoomgar's bike. Ironcially I did look at, rode and considered buying Hoomgars bike. It was a tad outta my price range (my price range was WELL below value). He has the custom black paint design on his. Mine just has the evil black stripe!

so, what is a midpipe diameer. I guess I can ...guess.

Sorry, should have been diameter. Need to learn to proofread.

Maro,

Are those screws or rivets on the back of the canister. I'm thinking once those are removed the baffle and whats left of the packing may pull out towards the rear. You can probably buy new packing and put it back together.

I'm not certain of this but thats what it looks like. It usually takes a lot of slow wiggling to loosen the baffle to get it out. The factory had to get the stuff it in their some how. You can always put new rivets back in. Take it slow.

Probably socket cap bolts. The end piece is toast and it looks like the perforated tube that the insulation raps around is gone too. Best option would be to replace the canister. That's why I said the Kerkers look to have the same diameter midpipe. Might ask someone with a Kerker to measure for you.

I'll take a closer look at this. thanks isloman

thanks Billy,
It's been hard to find info on this yosh can. I wouldn't know where to start to find a new baffle or re-pack it. Maybe a Kerker is the best option. Is it that much more to just get new pipes too?

A complete system will fetch a pretty penny. If I were you I would try to get someone to measure the midpipe diameter on a Kerker to see if it would work. I used to have one on my bike but I sold it when I got my Yosh Duplex.

This is who bought my Kerker, http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/member.php?u=90 . He might still have it if you PM him to get a measurement.

Maro, I have the same yosh exhaust for a 1k motor. basically the baffel is just a perferated tube with fiberglass blanket wrapped around it with two ends the wedge into the megaphone. the baffel looks like this ]====[

it would be pretty simple to reproduce one, just get a wire mesh garbage can cut it apart roll it to the dia you want and weld on some end caps or if you want quieter mac had one where they took two pipe with end caps and overlapped them in the midel and welded them together.

here is a pic of some types of baffels the middel one is prpbalby close to what you have in there now.

I can see about knocking mine out and taking a photo of it later tonight. the baffel is held in place by some sort of fastern at the end of the exhaust, then just take a bat or 2x then stick it in the smaller end of the megaphone and while holding on to the megaphone bang the bat/2x on to the ground knocking out the baffel.

NICE! Anyway you can try and re-post some of the links/pics you referred to in your post. they didn't come thru. and heck, any photos of your baffle would be fantastic. Duaneage and I were thinking of taking a crack at welding a baffle together somehow next week-end. But wasn't sure of the proceedure, or what would work so thanks

--also, Billy, thanks for the link... I PM'd that guy, but he hasn;t been on the boards in a while. thanks

Showed his last visit was 10-21-08.

Do you have any boneyards near you? You might be able to find a bike with an old Yosh exhaust on it at tone to get the guts out of the can. There's one near me I could check on perhaps this weekend.

Huh, for some reason when I looked it showed last post was august something. maybe that was his last thread started.

anyho, there is a boneyard near me. I'll give them a ring and see. thanks for the offer though.

That bottom most baffle in that pic looks exactly like the Kerker insert I have on the header I have (pretty sure its a Kerker) Its for the 8v bikes tho. The top one, whats that out of? Yosh? That thing is LONG.

Actually that bottom core looks like the one I had in a Yosh megaphone a number of years ago. the header tubes on it were bashed so I discarded them I kept the can in the basement for years. I may still have it but if I do it is at our old house in St. Louis. I will probably be back there over thanksgiving so if you don't have this rectified by then I'll look for it. I can tell you ir isn't an exact match to the pipe you have but it may work. On mine the baffle endcap actually fit over the outside of the can not inside like yours currently is.
I do not believe it is a Kerker. I also had a Kerker in the same time frame as the Yosh Mega. the Kerker has a coned endcap but the edges are sharper and it fits inside the pipe not over it.

If you havent resolved this by the week of thanksgiving PM me as a reminder to look.

Will do!

but dog-on I will do my best to have it resolved by then. This thing is stupid loud..... and will not pass inspection in it's current condition. I think I have 30 days to get it inspected...ppffftt.

Though I didn't get my 650 re-inspected this past year. it's registered, just not inspected. sshhhhhh. ... I hate that in PA they have to ride your bike to pass inspection. ya know how it feels to have a stranger beat your bike hard for a 15 minute ride.....NOT COOL.

You beat me to it. Oh well here is a link to using Stainless Steel wool for wrapping the exhaust baffle.

Pos

I believe I saved them off of one of your older posts, so all credit goes to you, sir!
