Will a Yoshimura oil cooled GSXR 1100 header fit a GSX1100 air cooled head? Thanks, G.

aren't the motors interchangeable? GSXR 1100 and GSX1100

Whoops now I read you say "air cooled GSX1100".

Answer? : The GSXR 1100 port spacing (center to center) is idential to the GS1100 80-83 and GS1150 84-86

The exhaust flanges are narrower on the GSXR than the GS; you either swap them out or slot the holes.

Thank you! I still need your 18" wheels, for my project. I sent an email to the guy that you mentioned, with no response. I may have found a donor 750 frame with a 1200cc engine. We'll see what happens. G.

bandit 12 is the same as gsxr1100 regards the flanges & this b12 exhaust has been on both a gsx1100 & the current gsx750 with no mods, i dont see why a yoshi or any other aftermarket exhaust should be any different

Well if the question is whether a GSXR Yoshi header pipe will fit a GS1100 motorcycle that is a completely different question. The answer is most times NOT.I don’t think there is such a thing as a typical GSXR header. There are several different tube bend styles on the 1st and 2nd gen GSXR 1100 headers. The main problem you will run into and this applies to most all Yoshimura pipes as well as D&D is that the #2,#3 pipes have a very short radius turn that is close to the flange and it will interfere with the GS1100E cross brace which is just below the exhaust ports.

So the key to look for is symmetry in the pipes as they exit the ports , bend and drop down to the collector. Allot of the Yoshi duplexes for example have some complex bends and most will not clear the cross brace described. Of course if you are willing to mod the frame then this issue can be mitigated.

By the way, even though I was sensitive to all these issues, I got fooled somewhat with my 2nd Gen SS Yoshi 4:2:1 pipe and I ended up with an interference issue in exactly this spot. I solved it by using exhaust spigot that pushed the exhaust forward about 0.75" and provided the required clearance with the frame.

In contrast the Muzzy SS pipe mounted on the GSXR1100G in my signature fits like a glove onto my GS1100ED. This pipe exhibits great bilateral symmetry which is the key characteristic of all the 4:1 pipes I have seen that will fit.

Tone the pipe you are showing there is quite symmetrical and so it fits without much issue at the cross brace. The first bend is made a good distance from the motor on all down tubes. Most Yoshi's don't look like that.

Hey jim
You are right of course, some exhausts will foul the frame cross piece & some will foul the frame on the first bend of #4 pipe but the question was "will a gsxr exhaust fit a gsx head" to which the answer is always YES :D

No mate, in terms of the original question they already fit

OK U win;

we must have different Gixxers this side of the pond. The header flanges have to me modified for proper "fit"

#1 its not a battle
#2 are your gixers different because you are special ?:)
#3 for the last time the question was do they fit the head & the answer is YES !.
#4 if the question had been do they fit the head AND around the frame the answer would have been, they fit the head but may require mods to clear the frame

the moral of all this bull is ask the question in the right way to get a full & correct answer,
eg i answered the question but didnt elaborate as i saw no need, after all nobody ever mentioned that the engine is in a gsx frame

Tone,
Something is funny here. I know that GSXR 1100 86-91 (1st and 2nd gen) header flanges are narrower than 80-86 GS1100/GS1150's. That is fact and I have both 83 GS1100E and 86 GSXR1100G to confirm. My understanding is B12 Bandit engines are nearly identical to 2nd gen GSXR's so I don't see how you can say

this b12 exhaust has been on both a gsx1100 & the current gsx750 with no mods

GSXR header bolt spacing is narrower than GS1100/GS1150 spacings.

Billy Ricks just bought a 1st Gen Hindle SS 4:2:1 brand new for a GSXR 750 and it bolted directly to his GS700 (line your GSX750). I don't think he had to modify it so that suggests the GS700/GS750 have the narrower exhaust flange bolt spacing and will not fit the GS1100E/GS1150's.

The picture I showed was me cutting the flanges because they did not fit (2nd gen Yoshi to GS1100E).

Right Just so we know there's no confusion with uk & us models

This set of stock b12 exhaust downpipes has been on a gsx1100et 16v 1075cc engine in a stock frame, thats the round tube frame & square cam end cap engine, 83 to 85 from memory

it now resides on an 84 gsx750es as you can see

it has never been on a gsx1100ef /efe engine, so i cant comment there thats the engine that looks similar to my 750 but are 1135cc I believe you would call these an 1150

The exhaust shown is the same in respect of the flanges etc to the one fitted to my gsxr1100k engine, i'm 99% sure the earlier 1052 engines are also the same with regards fitting at the head

I agree there is something amiss here & i'm beginning to doubt myself so what i intend to do is borrow my mates gsx1100et for an hour to measure everything up & maybe even fit my spare b12 downpipes to it to be sure if he will let me

I'll get back to you on this one ;)

cheers tone

A little Giablo R&D!!! Okay friends, this is the deal! The Yoshimura header fits the head. No clearance issues. You MUST alter the flanges! Even the muffler fit, since I have already modified my frame with custom rear-sets. BUT the bend on the down tubes is incorrect. There are actually two bends. Way too much space between the bottom of the engine and the collector. I could have dealt with that, but it looked wrong. So, who wants an almost new Yosh exhaust for their 2nd generation GSXR1100?

Without pictures it is hard to comment; but here is a picture of a 2nd gen GSXR 1100 Yoshi 4:2:1 pipe that is hanging low because it is hitting the cross pipe. I solved the problem with spigots to extend the pipe 0.75".
I now have approx 1/2" clearance between the pipe and the oil pan.

Another potential solution would be to have some aluminum cylindrical spacers made that would be captured inside the exhaust port (OEM gasket on both sides) and space the header out 3/4" net. U would still use the header's flanges, but with longer bolts.

Thanks for the comments. The header is similar to the one on your GSXR. The link for the pipe bender is not working. I can take pictures today if interested. Also, there is a part number on the exhaust. Maybe I can find a diagram online. I probably will not alter the exhaust any further. I have a line on a '87 GSXR with a 1200cc engine.

Ok here is the post where i eat humble pie :o

Let me explain further, my mate turned up on his gsx11 today as i was in the middle of doing something involving heavy engines & a bad back so as i was busy i only had a quick look at his bike but it seemed that jim is correct & the mounting flange holes on these are a couple of mm further apart than on the b12 or the gsx750 (60/62mm ish)

Once i'd finished what i was doing it started to bug me as i KNOW my b12 exhaust had been on both bikes so i decided to investigate more :) It seems that the holes in the flanges on my exhaust had been filed out to suit the 1100 engine by a previous owner & i had not realised or more likely never looked :o

I appologise unreservedly for my previous incorrect posts on this matter

Normal service will be resumed soon, tone

I might be wrong but I believe port diameter is different on the GSXR based engines and everything but the '83 and up 700/750E models. I had picked up a GS1100 V&H pipe but the pipe diameter was too large for my ports. Does the GSXR based pipes have slop inside the port? The GSXR based stuff is the same as my 700.

Forgive my facetious digression on this (obviously very serious to you guys) issue, but I just thought the thread title to be hilarious. I was surfing site, saw the title, and just HAD to read string thinking to myself: "wow, an 'oil-cooled header' eh?....I wonder how the hell they built that and make it work? A double wall header pipe with an oil divert line to it from engine to 'cool' it" and "I know that exhaust gas temp is pretty much hottest thing going on - 1200degF or so - but why on earth would the exhaust need to be 'cooled'?".

In all seriousness, it's an interesting thread and quite typical of "making stuff work" in a whole bunch of applications besides exhaust on old bikes (and cars, tractors, toasters, etc, etc).
