    Stan's GS1100GKE

    Finally got back to dis-assembling the cylinder head off Stan's (flyboy) GK. It sure needed valve stem seals as evidenced by the oil in the number one combustion chamber. Number four valve stem seal wasn't very far behind either.









    Number three exhaust valve shows evidence of the engine running a bit lean in the recent past. I wonder if those newly replaced intake boots and o-rings were any indication as to it's previous lean condition?




    And yes, that is a 'copper' u-joint hammer...

        Riding pants not up for mid thirtys (degF).

        Added some insulative panels to lower legs.
        Stitched some velcro strips to hold in place, and so can remove.



        But, ah, er, Did not involve any wrench.
        Well, there was a tool involved for changing the needle. DOnt know what I did to bend needle like that.
        Wife was working, so had to figure out how to change needle and rethread some of it myself.

        Snowing & Low 20s today, roads have some accumulation, so dont think I am gonna try them out today.

        Wife was annoyed that I was stiching through adhesive backed velcro and got the needle gummed up with the adhesive. SO I took needle out to garage and cleaned up with engine degreaser. All better now.

            Cleaned the carbon off the head and valves, scraped off some minor bits of valve cover gasket material, then measured the valve stem diameters. Tomorrow I will wash the head up at work, check the valve seating and spring length then start the reassembly of it.

              Lapped the valves and checked the seat widths. Checked the valve spring free lengths. All in spec so far. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get a chance to check the valve stem to guide clearance then if all is well in that department, install the new stem seals and start buttoning the head back together.

              I have a 'good' exhaust camshaft coming from Steve (steve) to replace the one which was worn undersized. http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...17&postcount=1

                rearsets

                Today I Mounted the rear set mount I had profile cut to fit the gsxr 1100 foot pegs I bought. I also remounted the rear brake master cylinder. I plan I will move the reservoir above the cylinder later with a more fixed mounting... possibly hard pipe?? suggestions? the only way to mount the cylinder was upsidedown unless i make a new bracket for it im certain it will work may be a bit difficult to bleed but should get the job done this way!

                  interesting! No xpurt here, but I wouldn't like hard pipe all the way to the reservoir due to possible vibration/fatigue issues but for just the curved bit and soft thereafter it should work. Trouble with that of course, is yet another connection.
                  Any chance you could cut away the Master cylinder mounting plate (and redrill for the bolt) to tip the Master more upright and relieve that kink?...a spring over top of hose too will help??

                    Gaiters on. Not sure it suits the bike but seeing as I had to polish scratches out of the forks when I changed the fork seals...hah-the truth is- dress-up is more fun than wrangling with the other beater-bike!

                        I'm the kind of person who NEEDS a list of things to do or I'll be lost and get nothing done (AKA the last month). I have a detailed 5 page list broken down into different projects with a time estimate attached. I don't have much time to do stuff after work but I'll get at least one of the shorter things done.

                          Thanks, Pete,Toasty.... yes,Xmas can be a write off trying to get things done in the shop. Otherwise, Chipping these little jobs off keeps the list short and are often the ones you need for a road test, too. My favourites!

                            I might be able to pick up a slightly damaged (slightly bent fork tube) front end from a 88/89 GSXR for a song ($20 lol). If I can get it I want to see if I can either... put the brakes on my new spoked wheels (and stock forks) OR fix it for cheap and put it on the bike if I can get the spokes to fit.

                            The forks are non-usd though but it's cheap so it's worth giving it a shot.

                              $20! I paid $40 for a small piece of plastic (the brake reservoir) yes,you must get stuff when opportunity knocks, I know!
                              ... snow here and beater-bike (GSX400EX )carbs off and on again looking for my own cold-cylinder-when-not choked issue. a useful thing I found was the vacuum slides operate differently! a diaphragm issue- If I plug the vacuums port with my finger, logically, the slide should stay up. It didn't. Oh, It looked fine taking it apart. (and when I last put it together!) But following better instruction found on GSR as to putting together, both now work "properly". It'll sour my beer if this massage didn't help, so I'll fire it up tomorrow.
                              Also, a bit of paint on the "Go-to-Meetings-bike" start-motor cover. That is an improvement.
