A few weeks ago bwringer purchased a replacement used engine for his 2000 Corolla S (90k vs. the 280k of the engine in the vehicle at the time). Since he knew I had done some engine transplants, I was volunteered as assistant and adviser. We had some issues removing the engine/transaxle, mainly a cotter pin breaking in one of the axles and the engine mounts being frozen to the mounting bolts. We struggled, but finally got it out. He ordered the parts (mainly the unusable engine mounts and bolts) and I came over the next weekend to install the newer engine onto the transaxle and then muscle it back into the car. We did that all in a long day, so he and twr1776 could go fireroading on their KLR650s the next day. Some pics:

Brian studies his Chilton's manual (have I ever mentioned how much I despise Chilton's manuals?), trying to figure out just how to maneuver it into the engine bay and connect the mounts.



Engine is mounted up and most things connected.



The big round yellow ball had already left the building, but we continued on. Brian did the under the car tasks, I was assigned the engine bay tasks. His aux transmission cooler is hanging down, not yet attached to the condenser.



When we were done, Brian gave me permission to kick him soundly in the crotch if he ever suggested doing this again. I, of course, accepted.
It does run much better, no longer uses a quart of oil to each tank of fuel, and the main driver, his wife, reports no difference in performance.

My first attempt at upholstery...I cut the foam down on a spare T seat and so I couldn't use the original as pattern. Not a total fail . I'm glad it occurred to me (because I didn't find this crucial info online) that all parts should be cut on the "bias"-the seat vinyl I have stretches one way, not the other, so if I'd cut it inline it would have been more a mess maybe. I will try again and incorporate some pattern to the top because I think I see how that is done....

Tick, tick, tick,,..

Weather was still good but can see a storm a few days away.


So figured I could still get in a Valve Adjustment to get rid of a loud ticking coming from Front Left Cylinder Top.
A real Pain (drain rad fluid, remove lower rad,,..)

Got it done, but still loud ticking. Probably a Valve issue.

Too late anyway, Winter is here,, time for the big Plastic Bag / Winter Storage. Will deal with it in spring (swap in another motor).


Got other stuff to do, prep skis, winterize vehicle fleet, start makin the kids Backyard Snowboard Terrain Park,,..

Removed all the items needed on Suzie Q, my 1100L, to pull her heart out and replace with a new one. Then we can pull her old heart apart and find out what her screaming was caused by.

Fed up with my sloppy gear shift (getting worse) so I decided to tackle it last night.

I got a new pivot bolt a little while back but it wouldn't go in even with some persuasion (hammer), so I figured the original pivot bolt must be worn down and the bit it goes through on the lever must be out of round.

So I bought a 12mm drill bit on the way home yesterday and pulled it apart last night.

Measured things up with the verniers and yep, out of round.

Ran the drill through a bit and tidied up with a file and the new pivot bolt is a nice snug fit.

Grease it all up and put it back together... oh dear what's that? A nice big stress crack in the footpeg bracket where the pivot bolt threads into. Lovely.

I'm hoping it's steel not alloy, and if it is I will attempt some of my notoriously crap welding on it today or tomorrow to see if I can improve things.

If not I'll be hunting a replacement footpeg bracket and cross my fingers it stays in one piece until I can find one!

Also used a magnet to confirm it is indeed steel...

Haha yes indeed! And it's fractured from upshifts by the looks... I suspect that the original heim joints and pivot were flogged out long before I got it but I never noticed and was just used to it.

Now that I've sorted the heim joints I've noticed the pivot and now the stress crack, so hopefully this will get it sorted.

Yamaha XT600 Tenere, that keeps cutting out
Carb strip and clean, owner needs to ge it through roadworthy this week and is in a panic that he is going to miss the deadline.
It has one of those fancy fandangled double barrel carbs with a primary and secondary throat, half VM and half CV type carb.
Got news for him though, he needs throttle cables and the fuel tap needs a rebuild as well.

Well, after rebuilding the front master cylinder again, we tried to bleed the front calipers. The lever still feels weak in the garage but holds the brakes pretty well so far so I don't know. I think I'll finally start it up for a ride by Sunday despite the tank not being done yet and see how everything runs.

pete, I have all those bits (no cost)and can mail them to you. Chrome is not great but will work fine. P.M. me if you want them.
They are off an 81 gsx400 but I'm really sure they are identical in these parts.
