    Hello from Central Michigan

Hi everyone, great forum here. A bit overwhelming, I'm sure I'll ask the same questions you've already answered lol.

I already made 1 of the 10 noob mistakes by buying a bike because it was cheap I picked up a 82 GS1100G for 200 bucks for a winter project.

It's pretty rough, but I'm looking forward to it, I love the simplicity of these old bikes.

Boy, that sounds familiar. A couple of years ago I picked up an 82 1100 G(L), also for $200, and wound up here. This site and Cliff's site has been super helpful. Watch out though, once you turn your cheap 200 dollar project into a decent running machine, you may be tempted to sell it and buy two more!

I'm in Houghton Lake and love to turn wrenches, sometimes I even get it right the first time! Welcome to the board, starting with a $200 bike makes you my kind of GS'r already.
        1980 Yamaha XS1100G (Current bike)
        1982 GS450txz (former bike)
LONG list of previous bikes not listed here.

I identify as a man but according to the label on a box of Stauffers Baked Lasagne I'm actually a family of four

            Welcome, jrgunn5150 (I like VH)!

I bought my "T" for $475 and got scolded by the bike shop owner I took her to for buying a $200 bike. I'll never forget that at this time of year in 2012.

Step in a job to Alamogordo, NM with Boeing in July of 2013 and I'm trailing my running GS for what would be about $1500+ of upgrades. Thanks to MrBill for being a super friend from the GSR.

Sadly, I had to take a break and get both my knees replaced due to severe osteoarthritis in my right knee and the left wasn't too far behind.

I've got a fork seal job to do when I re-engage. Steve rebuilt my carbs and I've got a tank to clean and replace the fuel petcock. At some point, I'll swap the single disc to a dual set up from an 82/GS1100.

These machines are great...I've learned quite a bit while in NM and done one rebuild and valve adjustment. Enjoy your tasks and take your time.

              Welcome to the site, Jr.
The "collective" would probably be the site Cliff put together a couple years ago along with the many helpful members.

                You got an 80s GS....eh?
                You have a volt-ohm meter?

                Ask away.
Although with any problem, it will be good to post in appropriate section(say, electrical for electrical problem). And will be good if you show you have done some searching, and have learned at least something (like you already did with the "Ten top mistakes").
But ask away. Plenty of folks willing to help. And most of them know what they are talking about. And many are good at explaining themselves.

Outstanding! Somehow I hadn't come across that in my reading.

Small world, my wife has a antique booth in Nashville, I was just down there today. I'm originally from Muskegon lol, we went backwards.

I do have a voltmeter, I have spent a little time with it on the bike. I believe it is over-charging currently, during the winter re-do I intend to do the SH775 upgrade.

My more immediate concern is the shocks all the way around. I need to get it up on a stand and figure out what to about the busted rear mount bolt and the fact that the swingarm doesn't seem to swing at all lol.

While it's torn down I'd like to rewire it to be more efficient and simple, I won't need turn signals for instance, probably not going to run a dash either. I've already found one ground that's dangling and a badly patched power wire from the battery to the solenoid.

I started a build thread in what i believe is the appropriate section to document the fiasco lol.

Have you had occasion to find if the dangling ground wire is the wire with ring terminal that is suppose to be on the solenoid mount bolt?. That is to ground the battery box which otherwise is not well grounded. Could be the cause of the overcharging, as the r/r relays on the battery box being grounded since that is where the r/r balck (negative) wire is landed (usally).

                        .

I had a job interview and changed the oil and transmission fluid in my pickup today, so I haven't looked into it yet, I just pulled the battery last night when I put it on the stand.

It sounds like that's exactly what it is, because it is about a 12 ga wire with a ring terminal on it lol, and it could easily reach the solenoid.

Alright, I have one more probably obvious question.

When referring to "the parts fiche", is there some specific resource somewhere that everyone is looking at? I don't see it on the Bikescliff page, and I just usually go to Babbits and look at their diagram, but it's kind of clunky and silly.
