About time I introduce myself - gs 750

I was on here before but I couldn’t get access to my old email so I just made a new account lol I work in commercial Construction down in Nashville, TN as a Super. But my first love was cars I just didn’t make enough as a mechanic so it was time to change careers.

I own a 79 gs 750 that’s mostly just a parts bike at this point but really I’ll probably end up doing something with it if I ever rebuild the bent valves. But it has been chopped on before in the rear so some kinda brat bike is in the future for it. Or I’ll just part out the spoke wheels, tank and carb once I get all the good bits off it I need.

Also picked up a mostly complete 78 gs 750 last weekend that once my carb o-rings come in and all the parts I need for the two pot upgrade (my bike didn’t come with any front brakes components) I’ll be much closer to getting it back on the road and assessing what else it will need. But I know for certain I’ll need a seat as this is a NY bike and the seat pan is rotted out ☹️.

Anyway so that’s me. And this forum is often I’ve used it for years to help buddies service their GS bikes so thanks for having me! 👊

Small world, Heck, a local guy. You ever been to Cedars of Lebanon st. park? I'm in sight of it. One of my buds has a 1978 GS750, I went with him when he bought it new back in "78", He's still riding it. My first bike was a "77" GS750. Bent valves on an old roller bearing 750?? "WHAT HAPPENED"? Welcome back. Good luck with the project.

No I haven’t. I live up on the north side in Springfield but after looking it up I definitely need to make it up that way! I’ve only been in Tn for 3 years.

Pulled the heads off about 6 years ago for a leak and I had it miss timed when I tried to kick it over so it made a semi rotation before stopping hard on a valve. They might be ok but it got shuttered into the back of the garage and it’s just been sitting back there until I moved to a new house and decided it was time to start wrenching again.

Bummer, but stuff happens. If ever you get up this way holler, I'll buy you a coke & bag of peanuts down at the Norene store..

Welcome back. I too was an automotive tech for 10 years. Topped out and it just wasn't enough. Still work on all my own cars and toys though. Good luck with the build, it sounds like you should have enough to make one whole bike, with a pile of spares.

they came in today! If my rotors show up tomorrow I’ll be able to get all that mocked up finally. Turned out the original lines were on the bike just tied up behind the headlight for some reason. Now I just need to source some M/c rebuild kits and rebuild the rear setup as well while I’m in the mood...

I bought M/C kit ("83" GS1100E) from "All Balls", some parts were correct, some were not. I never gave them a chance to correct it, I was in a rush. I just used the new parts that fit, reused old parts & got brakes working without leaks. Definitely not correct parts in kit.

I use an EX650 master cylinder. Plenty of those around for 30-40 bucks that don’t need a rebuild....

i would replace the brake lines, they will probably be full of gunk.... I use an EX300 Mc on the rear. Needs a bit of modification but reasonably easy.
The rear caliper needs to be split in two as there is an O ring in the middle

Thats the way I was leaning after pricing rebuild kits what years on the 650 and 300? I’m going to do the lines I’m just trying to get everything else functioning first. Between rebuilding carbs and swapping to a new R/R I’m staying pretty busy lol

I’ve been going back and forth on upgrading to a 520 chain and sprockets or just getting a new chain for what I have.
