Castle built over 53 years by one man

This is something that everyone who values hard work and persistence should see! When I came across it a few years back I was in complete awe in the work and ingenuity it took to construct it out in the middle of nowhere, truly amazing accomplishment. The best part? It's on Colorado's "Million Dollar Highway" which is a heck of a nice ride.

Impressive project .... However I do think he's nuts letting people climb around on it . Just putting up a sign doesn't relieve you from liability ......

Well he DOES have a large sign letting you know that you're trespassing on private property and he's not responsible for anything that might happen to you which is why I stayed off the ironwork catwalks.

The fact that he's very candid about how he sees his responsibility could probably land him in some hot water in court. On the other hand his true spirit of freedom and the fact he's dirt poor would sway most from trying to sue him in the first place. After all, what are you going to take away from this guy, a tourist attraction that can no longer be used after someone sued?

Ever work at a ski hill ? They have signs too and they get sued all the time . Not to mention this idiot lets kids climb around on it .... I signed a waiver to get my car towed once out of a snowed in canyon . They damaged it and I went to the insurance company to make a claim . The insurance company told me the waiver wasn't worth the paper it was written on and made the towing company pay .....

My bet is you don't wander very far away from town much, especially where the tourists wouldn't bother going.

I spent 35 years at sea working 5 months a year ..... I didn't spend the other 7 months in Kanada ..... And if you want to try where the tourists don't go give the Rohtang Pass in the Indian Himalayas a shot ...... Your sphincter will tighten on more than a few occasions .....However I can't say what your views are on what I have or have not done interest me in even the slightest . Nor can I see what the Hell that has to do with an opinion on legal liabilities ......

What was meant by that was both US and Canadian folks who live away from the "busy" areas tend to use common sense over legal implications when approaching a place like the castle. You go there because it's a cool place and "take your chances" when it comes to getting hurt just like walking an old rope bridge in the backcountry.

It is a bit sad that something amazing like this generates more discourse on potential litigation than on the absolute miracle of its creation. What an incredible accomplishment. I need to get up there!

It's a gorgeous area and quite a bit less traffic than you'll find further north. The Greenhorn Campground in Colorado City is reasonably priced and easy to get to off the interstate. Earlier I mentioned the caste being on the million dollar highway which was wrong but it is close, here's a snapshot about 30-40 miles north of the castle looking toward rocky mountain national park. Yes, you gotta go!

I used to ride with friends from Phoenix to Durango once a year. Sometimes we'd foray out to Ouray and Telluride, so I'm familiar with some of that area.
