    1980 GS1000 Engine problem

Man! My bike ran fine to work. When I started it to come home. The engine would backfire and die. Restarted with the choke, tried to give it some throttle a lot of poping and the engine dies. How could it break sitting over night? Just filled it with gas on my way to work. It must have spark cuz it started. Valve problem? Broken valve spring maybe? What do you Guys think? When it starts no knocks or bad engine noise. Just runs like crap pops and dies.

Maybe carbs/petcock leaking causing the plugs to foul? Have you cleaned the carbs, replaced the various O-rings, and checked the petcock lately?

Water in fuel/bad gas/fuel-diesel mix possibly? how far is it to work?

completely drain it and refill with fresh fuel and save a sample.

My vote goes too bad gas too. Maybe it stirred up sediment in the tank?

          Hi,

Is there any rust in your tank? Maybe the carbs sucked up a booger? I started my bike one morning and it began to run like crap on the way to work. I started checking everything and eventually found that a coil wire had broken. After the connection was repaired it ran like a champ. Good luck.

          Thank you for your indulgence,

            Cleaned soaked new o-rings

The carbs were all redone last Nov. I cleaned the Tank and coated it. The only thing I have done latey is put an inline fuel petcock on. The tank petcock lets gas leak through. So I went cheap. Can that cause all those things ? It did run to work. 8 miles, one way. Thanks, Guess I'll start with inline petcock removeal.

They would need the key to get in the gas cap.

I had the same situation, turned out to be bad gas. Bike had been running great and 5 miles after an all most complete fill-up it started running like crap.
The next day i went back to the gas station and the kid at the counter said they had been receiving complaints for a week.
Fresh gas, a dose of SeaFoam and i was good to go.
                  Hopefully you are as lucky.

                    gas problem

I found the vacume hose off carb#2, I put it back on. Still runs like crap. When I put the petcock on prime the gas is not coming out all that fast more like a trickle then a nice flow. I'm going to put my remote tank on it and see what happens.

                      Found the problem

I checked the spark and noticed there was some sparking when I would turn off the ignition. Seemed odd, so I switched out igniter box with another one I had here. It started right up without any problem so I took it for a ride. It was not the gas. But it sure acted like it. Running good again. Thanks for the help.

                        Hi,

Why is it always the last thing you check?

Thanks for sharing your fix. Now get out there and ride!

Technically if it was the first thing you checked it would end up becoming the last now wouldnt it?
