Final Drive Leak
Well, I got the GS running and driving again last night. Rode her to work this morning and guess what...leaking gear oil from the final drive "pumpkin" again. Any ideas on what to do? I have replaced the seal and been VERY careful adding oil this last time but still have a wet back tire and when I stopped at work it was dripping on the ground. Time for a complete rebuild? Anything else specific that goes wrong?Tags: None

There are a lot of possible reasons for it to still leak. the vent hole is plugged, the sealing surface damaged, the seal was damaged on installation, leaking from the o-ring which seals the two halves together, ect.
as I see it, your choices are to take it completely apart, inspect all the bits and re-seal it, or buy a used third member.Last edited by rustybronco; 08-04-2010, 09:11 AM.

Shaft drive final drive units are cheap - it costs more to ship than they are worth. I'd just get a used one and roll the dice. I have one I'd give away but shipping to Canada is a pain so maybe look local or on ebay.Ed
To measure is to know.

it may be some residual oil left over from original leak, that gear lube is very messy, it will collect all around where the the o-ring housing is bolted on the drive , i used compressed air and it took awhile to clean, just resealed mine and it went very smooth , a mechanic told me to use 3-m pads on where the seal rides,he says it needs a bit of a scuff for the new seal.............good luck
