GS1100G Oil Cooler Addon?

I have a 1982 GS1100G(exK) that has burned another stator. Is there any way to add an oil cooler? I do not have time to tear down, and drill and tap at this time. Hopefully there is some provision for this? E Mail me at schoonerbills@gmail.com. Thanks.

Hi Mr. SchoonerBill,

You'll find an oil cooler tutorial on my little website for the 8 valve engines. The procedure for the 16 valve motors is a little different but you don't have to worry about that.

I think the cause of your burning stators is bad/dirty electrical connections. See the electrical section of my little website for tips.

I really don't think an add on cooler will help with the problem of burning up stators. have you made sure all the stator connections, R/R connections to the fuse panel and so forth have as low a resistance as possible; then properly 'bonded' the R/R's negative to the battery?

Thanks to all for the tips! I brought up the oil cooler as the voice on the phone at ElectroSport said the oil temp could soften the epoxy coating and allow the stator wires to short out. The new stator arrived within 18 hours of calling them. I will go over the ground side of the wiring again. I cut out all of the aptly named 'quick disconnects' and used butt connectors and heat shrinked them along with eliminating extra wire. Copper must have been cheap in 1982! I figured that an engine that is so well built would have an easy way to add an oil cooler. I am not giving up on this bike as it is impossible for me to get off of it after a ride without an ear to ear grin! What a great combination of acceleration and ride. It even has adequate brakes!

It's not difficult to add an oil cooler but I'm not sure that will improve stator life in a major way. Our resident electrical expert (Posplayer) touts the Compufire R/R as the most important thing you can do to protect your stator. Try searching the forum for lots of info regarding this subject. If you have your heart set on an oil cooler drop me a PM since I have some adapters.

While you're cleaning up things, take a look at your R/R- is it original or a some thing else. A good replacement would be a honda (Shindengen )- many members have had good luck with them and member Duaneage has used ones at a good price.
