They arent rubber far as i can tell..more like some kind of hard asbestos type material.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
1978 GS 1000 E, 1979 GS 1000 S, 1973 Yamaha TX 750, 1977 Kawasaki KZ 650B1, 1975 Honda GL1000 Goldwing, 1983 CB 650SC Nighthawk, 1972 Honda CB 350K4, 74 Honda CB550
NEVER SNEAK UP ON A SLEEPING DOG..NOT EVEN YOUR OWN.
I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

Suzuki superseded the original black pieces with gray. I ordered some in an attempt to replicate the original look on my first S, but was disappointed when the parts arrived - never installed them. Wonder if I could dye them in some concentrated Ritt dye?sigpic

Those pieces are definitely some sort of rubber, although the new gray type feel a little plasticy.
I'm going to try the Ritt dye first and see what happens. I've dyed plastic before with that stuff and it really gets inside some materials. To be honest, I don't really care that much either way and not sure I want to resort to painting or coloring those pieces with something that's going to fade or scrape off easily. I'd forgotten I even had them until this thread hit the screen.Ed

but when I checked my 1000 out, it felt like a feather light hard brittle brick material, like a charcoal, they were grayed. Don't know if they're located where there supposed to be, one fin has two different heights, one has none, others one, same on both sides, 18 of them there though.
I pulled my rubber pads for the 1100E, under the the revised part number they come in a interconnected strip of nine (The bike uses 4 sets of 4 interconnected which are black) they are dark gray and feel like hard rubber to me, they are about the same size as the 1000's, rounded on one end and wedge shaped also. I'm thinking they'll work for the 1000 also. Since my 1000 has 18, and my 1100 already has a very nice set, I just think I'll mothball these as you have done to yours Ed.

Those pieces have arrows on them. What is the significance?
Which way are they supposed to point in each application?
Back on top and down on the sides?

And speaking of unobtainable rubber parts...
I'd love to find a good/new rubber "grommet, starter motor" (P/N 31271-45001) that seals the notch in the starter cavity, next to the oil distribution cavity. Lots of little parts like these are no longer available.Ed
