The starter clutch is the thing in your hand. It's bolted to the charging rotor. Make sure the throw-out springs and pushers are all there and haven't punched through the thin metal housing and that the rollers move freely. Also make sure that none of the three bolts are sheared in two. Then, make sure the primary gear (the big one in the pic) mesh with the starter gear correctly. Also, it's hard to tell in your pic but are there teeth missing from the primary gear??

teeth are good, starter just spins when I hit start, and from my other post guys were saying something was wrong with the started clutch

rotor not loose, it was really hard to pull off, I made a puller and the weld broke so I had to make a bigger weld, and even that was cracking when it came off

Sorry you went through the process of taking off a starter clutch on a big end crank without checking the starter first.
I've seen rotors welded on those big end cranks. You got lucky you even broke it loose.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

you can remove the stator cover and have a helper hold the idler gear from moving with a screw driver(against the side as not to slide over) and see whats happening or whats not happening.
give me a call if you want and let me listen to it while you hit the button before taking it apart again.
also if you can't find a nice starter for cheap...i have the one we discussed if it does turn out to be your starter.
