My 1000G with 84k on it used to burn some oil. I did some big trips & on some big days it would go from Max to min when I checked it the next day. All depended on the type of mileage but I would expect to add some most days.
It never fouled a plug & showed similar compression numbers to yours (135-150). It would puff when you opened it up at the bottom of a hill or to give it the boot etc.

On the Skunk I don't use so much. Over 2,000 miles I would expect to use 500ml or less. Only 32k on that one though.

With the low mileage and good compression I wouldn't take it apart.
Replace th seals like the guy in the other thread and call it good for another twenty years or so.

Just read the post. Sure looks like the way to go. Time to order up some valve seals and finally do it .....maybe this winter.

Looks like I had better reread that thread. Didn't think I could get away with not doing the rings, but maybe so. Hey Sandy, Ya I am hoping to make Charlies this September. Not sure which bike, the 78 or the 80 but either way I'm hoping to be there. Might try and bring Trevor along as well. You heading down with a group?

Those numbers don't indicate bad rings. It may have stuck oil control rings, but the compression rings are still good.

The compression numbers look decent, yes, but what about the blue smoke on acceleration? and what is an "oil control ring"? thanks Dale.

The top two rings are the compression rings. The third one down is the oil control ring. It consists of two wipers and an expander. If the oil control ring is stuck in it's groove, because of varnish or carbon, the engine will smoke.

When you do go to repair it, if it were mine, I'd pull the head and cylinders just to inspect the bores, the rings and get the base gasket and stud o-rings replaced. Thirty four year old gaskets tend to leak.

I'm with you on this one Rusty, mine was using a qt. per thousand. It ran fine and I have to admit that it just jumped up my hiney having to add oil every time I stopped for gas. I found bad valve seals, leaking head gasket, leaking base gasket and the oil control rings were so bad that the return holes in the pistons were completely blocked.

Now it uses between 8 and 10 oz. between oil changes, runs like a new one, I feel like I can take it anywhere at any time with no issues and more importantly doing the work satisfied my obsessive compulsive disorder

these are fine machines when maintained properly and it will probably last longer than I will.

                    Cheers

[QUOTE=azr;1668376 I just want to get through the season with her, and don't want to be dead on the side of the road down in Oregon (not sure if Todd will rescue me twice!!). She goes through a litre of oil per 800 KMS or so, I figure at that rate I don't have to change the filter much, lol.

I was following that thread for a bit Todd but I thought it was impossible to change the seals by not removing the head, I'll look again. I've got to do the rings anyways so I don't really mind pulling her apart.[/QUOTE]

Of course I'd rescue you again, the dog misses you!

But, I hope to be riding with you rather than sitting at home twiddling my thumbs this year

I'd pour some Rislone or similar down the spark plug holes and see if the oil rings free up

                        #3 carb problems? Petcock related?

Yeah, I should be there and probably bring a couple of buddies. This crowd is sort of addictive. Might have to learn how to ride all over again though. Life's been crazy, bike hasn't turned a wheel since last fall.

Dale, thanks for the education on the rings, always learning something on this site. I've seen those NOS OEM cylinder gaskets on ebay before but have always been reluctant to use them. Can a gasket that old really still be ok to use? Maybe I'm wrong.

Todd, never heard of Rislone before, looks like our Canadian Tire sells it, I'm sure the local Auto shop has something like is as well, I'm guessing if the oil rings are stuck and free up I should be able to notice by simply having less blue smoke? As far as #3 not firing it all seems to be pointing to something plugged in the carb. I put a new rack on it a few weeks ago (I rebuilt them for a guy last fall then bought the bike from him, used the rack as it had all new parts) and every since then I had intermittent non firing on #3 or #4 so I just figured something was floating around in there. Now it's isolated to #3 only. As far as I can 'tell' the petcock seems to be functioning, it's not leaking anyways, do you have some thoughts on that? It would be great to see you this year, riding the bike rather than fixing it of course. Although the multiple personal tours into town were great for me, especially Doc Browns As usual I've got 12-14 days off around the rally so I'm hoping to make another trip out of it. I'll be getting in touch before I head down for sure.

Sandy, I doubt you'll be doing much relearning, pretty sure it's in you like breathing is to the rest of us.

There is a NOS head gasket installed on my 80 850, I sent a NOS aftermarket head gasket for Stan to use on Jennifer and a NOS head gasket awaiting installation on the Skunk. I have quite a few NOS cam cover gaskets in the basement for my old 82 and I wouldn't hesitate using them either. The only thing I would not use is an old hard base gasket.
