    Need a good spline

    For my 1981 650GL

I'm running a temporary, as I'm pretty sure it's not one of the "good" ones. As I understand it, anything from 1982 or later would be one of the good ones, and those are usually black or silver in color.

Is that correct, or can someone clarify?

Given that, is this worth pursuing?

Or, if anyone has one they'd be willing to part with, feel free to PM me...

You need to look for an early 80~81 black spline or a later replacement spline. The one in than wheel listed on Ebay, more than likely is one of the soft splines.

I've been living under the hope (delusion?) that all the 650's splines were good.
What does "running a temporary" mean? and how does your pumpkin look?

Running a temporary means he had what he suspects is the inferior soft one as a back up and has installed that to get him by until he can find a good hardened one.

What color is your "temporary" spline?

The early ones are black, they are good.
The soft ones have a gold tint, they are not so good.
The newer ones are silver, they are also good.

How much wear does your spline have on it? I got 37K out of one of the gold ones which I thought was pretty decent.

IMHO if you think you can get one more tires worth of wear out of the spline finish wearing it out and get one of the OEM replacement silver ones. You can also look for the black one but from the e-bay ad I also suspect it is the gold one that you posted the link to.

I'm using one I pulled from a local yard this spring. I'll probably order OEM this winter unless I find a good one before then, at which point I'll pull the wheel and inspect. Knowing I'll need one eventually, I'm looking for some clarity as to which used ones to pursue so I can grab one if the opportunity arises.

So the "early" 1980 models might have one, or I should be looking for one from 82 or later?

No way of knowing on this one then, I suspect...

Yes, that appears to be one.

Thanks rustybronco, I was pretty sure it was one of those based on the gold colored posts and black main body of the part. Made an offer and should be in my hands within a few days.
