gs1100 engine on 850

    gs1100 engine on 850

    now i had a thread but lost it...if im correct i remeber the 100 motor will fit right in to the 850 frame an such right?

    my buddy is getting an 82 1000 shaftie with a 1100 titleless bike...is it just swap motors and go? anything else i should switch?

    also will my 4-1 header fit off my 850 onto the 1100?

    and a few more silly questions...

    how much more power will it give...
    and is the 1100 as durable as the 850

    You will have to do a LOT of creative engineering to fit the 100 motor in the 850 frame.

    There were no '82 1000 shafties.

    Is the 1100 titleless bike a shaftie?

    The port-to-port spacing is about the same, but the tubing might be a bit small.
    Not sure about the height from the exhaust port to the bottom, for clearance under the oil pan.
    You will likely have to fabricate some rear mounts.

    If you are fitting the 100 that you originally described, there will be a massive LOSS of power.

    Given the same treatment, the 1100 will be as durable as the 850.

      Yes you can put an 1100 in an 850 frame. I have done it. When your removing the 1100 motor you will have to remove the valve cover. Other than that its a plug and play situation.

        ok thanks..i was about to post that i went an looked at it...its complete minus carbs...

        i wasnt sure if the shaft/mounts was the same

        thanks for the info guys...

        also whats a running(ill hear it before i buy it) 1100 motor worth without carbs(has airbox)..also coils the same i presume?

          just an update i just bought the 1100 for 50 bux!!!...all cyls have within 135-140 psi...i also got the carbs that are in need of some soaking....

          time for another winter project

          edit: also how can i tell if its a points engine?...

            What is the year model of the 1100? If it is a an 80 or later, it is electronic.

            2015 CAN AM RTS


            Stuff I've done to my bike:dancing: 1100E front end with new Sonic springs, 1100E swing arm conversion with new Progressive shocks installed, 530 sprockets/chain conversion, new SS brake lines, new brake pads. New SS fasteners through out. Rebuilt carbs, new EBC clutch springs and horn installed. New paint. Motor runs strong.

                Pop off the ignition cover. It will have either points/condensors or electronic advance mech.

                  can i swap my 81 850 ignition onto this?..or would it be easier to sell this engine

                    There are two ways, and they are somewhat related:

                    1. If it's a Suzuki shaft drive, it does not have points (unless it's a '79 850).

                    2. If it's an 1100 (either shaft or chain), it does not have points.

                    All Suzuki GS bikes came with electronic ignition starting with the '80 model year.

                    The '79 850 was the only shaft-drive Suzuki that was available before the '80 model year.

                    The 1100E and 1100L (chain-drive) started in '80, so they had electronic ignition.

                    The 1100G and 1100GL (shaft-drive) started in '82, so they had electronic ignition.

                      ahhh ty steve...that explains alot...now one more question..how do i know its an 1100...the carb to intake boots are larger then my 850 i know for sure

                      also will the 140mph work on my 81 850?

                        Look on the front of the cylinders, I think it would be the bottom edge, left side (in front of Cylinder #1). The engine displacement is shown there.

                        Yes, the speedo should work.

                            That would be correct.

                            None of the bikes were ever quite the displacement that was shown on the side covers. Some were more, others were less, all were approximate.

                              Remove the right side crank/ignition cover and look. If you see two sets of points, that is your answer. LOL
