Lynn, can you tell me why they won't interchange? Is the output shaft spline of the 1000/1100's transmission a different size than the '850 or ?

Personally, I will just consider the source.

First off I didn't see Steve mention any tire size when he posted about "Goldie" Erics G. His bike does have a 2.66:1 final drive. I can attest to that, since I have the same item to do the conversion on SuzyII, my 1000G. I plan on doing it when she becomes a 1100G.

Sorry, but I'm sworn to secrecy and until I get the go head from Eric, you'll have to figure it out yourself.

The tease is right up Eric's alley. "I know the answer but I'm not telling you"...blah blah blah. What ever. Even in death (so to speak) Eric is annoying.

Well, I'm not sworn to secrecy, fact is I just don't know. Maybe he changed the tranny gearing with another model.
Besides I like 'em stock, don't need no grandma gearing.

The VS1400 has a 2.66:1 final drive. Off hand it looks like if you remove the spline adapter from the GS unit and insert it into the VS unit it might work.

Possibly the VL1500 and the C90 series will work also??

I like it! Especially for the 850, cruzin around here on the slab if your not doing 80 everyone is passing you like your parked and at 80 the 850 is right up to about 6000 rpm. Changing it to a 2.66 ratio would bring it down significantly, better mileage, less buzz, less wear and tear. The 850's weren't known for there lightning speed anyway and it would make it a better sport tourer so what's not to like?

Squawked the tire between first and second on the way to work this morning. I'd say you need to work the throttle a wee bit more.

These quotes and attitudes are exactly why Eric wont share. Sad though, since no one else gets to benefit from his knowledge.

I have only ridden one 850, that of bwringer. It hauls the mail, to say the least. Sport tourer, sure, but it flat gets up and goes also.

There is no doubt at all that it will lower the engine speed, but I'm not so sure about the "better mileage" part of that.

For my 850s, 4000 RPM is about 55 mph. Change my final drive to a 2.66, the engine speed would drop to just over 3400 RPM. That is just a bit lower in the power band, would have to open up the throttle a bit more to get the power that I need. At 5000 RPM (70 mph), engine speed would drop to about 4300. Not a bad speed, but might be lower that necessary for the road speed.

Might be just enough to offset any fuel savings, might be just enough to upset any fuel savings.

                                .
