transmission problem?

Went out for a thrashing today, 100km in I wasn't able to down shift into 1st gear at a stop sign. Hit the garage and checked the rear-sets, they were fine but oddly the front pedal was lower than it was supposed to be. Can get it into 2nd and 1st when its not running with a little bit of work, BUT can also hear a strange noise coming from the transmission area when the bike is off but have it in gear and rotating the tire. Pulled the sprocket cover and all is good there and can easily tell the noise is coming from 'behind' the sprocket somewhere Doesn't make any noise of course when it's in neutral and rotating the tire. The bikes back home now and I'm going to drop the oil pan and see what's floating around in there. Any thoughts on the cause? I'll take a video of the noise before I pull things apart.

Ok, so drained the oil and nothing in the oil, haven't dropped the pan yet. I pulled apart my rear set and found an issue that was causing possibly some of the problem, won't know till I ride it on the road. Here's the video. The noise you hear is when the bike is in gear an I turn the wheel taking up the bit of slack. The odd rattle only occurs when one the forst turn of the wheel when the slack is taken up, it doesn't continue as you rotate the wheel. I wonder if it is in my clutch basket, maybe the nut?? It does truly sound as though it is in between the front sprocket and the back of the clutch basket.

Ya, no my failure in explaining properly. I put the bike in gear on it's centre stand, 'pull in the clutch' and rotate the rear tire. There is some slack before things engage and the transmission starts moving (pretty sure that's always been there), at the moment when the slack gets taken up and the transmission just starts to move is when you can hear that odd noise. Once you're past that split second of everything engaging/starting to move the noise is gone. Rotating the tire with the clutch in there is no noise, in neutral there is no noise. It does sound as though something is loose, just not sure what yet. The oil light works as it always has. Sticking my head down in that vicinity it unfortunately sounds like it is behind the clutch basket but I won't know till I go in there. I'll post the results.

Pulled the clutch apart and found that the basket had some fairly good wear marks on it, I could move the plates a bit in the basket. Once the basket was out I couldn't replicate the sound so I found a better basket and buttoned her all up and the noise is gone. I'll take her for a spin tomorrow to make sure it's all fixed but at this point I think I got it. One thing, the main shaft seems to moves a tich more than my other 1000's, like maybe an 1/8-1/4" more than the others (when I hold the tire so it can't move and rotate the shaft). Is this a sign of something? or just ignore it?

The slack felt is the same when all of the clutch parts are in or out of the bike. I did have a good look at the hub spline and they appeared in good shape and fit snug. Yes, I wondered about the hub bearing Chuck but being as I don't know much about working on the transmissions on these bikes yet I figured the only way to replace that would be to pull the engine apart.

Ya, I've got a 'few' of those as well, ha,ha.... thanks for the offer though Charlie, much appreciated. This reminds me that I want to have one welded up to try and avoid and catastrophic failures.

All you need to do to replace the hub bearings is to take off the hub nut and wiggle the entire basket in and out and the bearing will work its way toward the cover side. Then just grip the edge of the bearing and pull it out. Reinsert the new bearing while lifting the basket to get the bearing started..shove it in all the way and put the hub nut back on. That or you can remove the basket completely and put in the new bearing...either option works.

My mistake, I'm not using the right name for the right bearing. I'm referring to the bearing that is in the actual transmission casing, the BIG one. I know that the others are easily changed, I've had the baskets out multiple times on these bikes but I've never gone into the transmission other than taking the oil pan off.

Problem fixed. Took her out for a spin and the noise is gone and she shifts fine again. So the shifting issue was from 2 loose parts on the rearset and the noise was from the clutch basket being worn. Thanks for the help all.
