Home Paint Baking
I just got some high heat paint from Princess Auto, and it says on the can that unless i cure it at something like 650F for an hour, the paint will rub off when handled. then it says not to use a home oven.... well all i have is a home oven.. but its a rental.

If I had to guess I'd say it is a liability thing. The fumes that are put off are potentially hazardous. I've known people with ovens in their workshop just for this purpose. Paint hardens up nice when you set the oven on warm.

650 degrees? That's hot! Even hotter than a powder coat booth runs at. I would worry that metal or aluminum might distort at that temp.
I'm searching craigslist for an old oven to put in my garage to powder coat small parts. Ovens work good for curing paint, but most paint only needs about 140-170 degrees to cure.
I wouldn't do it in the house... maybe not toxic, but it is stinky.
What kind of paint are you using?

The brand is Power Fist. made for retail fron Princess Auto.
it is supposed to be protective for up to 1500F and needs to be cured at 650F for an hour after air drying for an hour.
The part i want to paint is my front brake caliper. I am also worried about warping the part.
On that.. is there another paint I can use for this?

Yes, for calipers all you need is a catalyzed paint system like they paint cars and bikes with. An auto body supply house should be able to get you what you need, but it won't be in a spray can, you'll need to mix this stuff and use a spray gun.Currently bikeless

This was a post i made on another forum, it is an zhipp r-31 on e-bay from tuulshed. it uses very low cfm's just don't use a heavy body paint.
That's an automotive base coat that I was spraying and it did just fine.
Yes it was closed on mine when i received it and i just checked it, it was about 3/4's of the way open when I was spraying, i'm sure i can get a 4" pattern with an even layout (it had an WONDERFUL cigar shaped pattern) and when i play with it some more i'll post photo's, just need more gun time to play with pressures and fan adjustment.
I am in no way dis-pleased with it!!!!!!!!, just my observations for a 19.50 gun+ shipping and anyone that thinks they're getting a 220.00 gun for that price needs their head examined, I certainly didn't, I was just compairing it to it's self.
***edit*** 2nd test, 31psi @ 4" away (tried it at 4-1/2" to 5" also), air adjust 3/4 turn open (any further it goes to a figure 8 spray) 3-1/2" tall pattern still a nice even CIGAR pattern like the lower rh pattern you just posted, heck the iwata only shows 3.9inches!
regulator not included...
***edit*** at 3-1/2 to 3-3/4 inches the metallic layout is PERFECT on the gun i received, it's worth a lot more than what I paid.Last edited by rustybronco; 01-11-2007, 04:37 PM.

I have used VHT Hi temp caliper paint from Canadian Tire with amazing results. It comes in a variety of colours & must be baked @200 degrees for 1 hour. It is very hard to scratch & is brake fluid & gas/oil resistant. Don't waste time on other finishes. This one works!!!

hmm.. I don't have a spray gun, or even a compressor for that matter... I guess I'm going to have to call in a favour from one of my buddies... but I got a feeling its going to come back bright green or something.. (I want black) That's just the type of friends I seem to collect.

hey Njones, does that come in a spray can? can it be painted on with a brush?
Maybe I'll just go and get a couple bottles of nail polish...
or get a car battery and annodize it in my toilet.

No, this stuff is in a spray can. There are lots of colours too. There is also a finish made by the same company that is applied with a brush. It's in the rattle can section of CTC with all the car colours.

VHT caliper paint works quite well. I used it on a 84 gs550 project bike I rebuilt with no complaints. In fact, I used it on the fork tubes and clutch/brake resevoirs as well.
I don't remember reading anything on the can about needing to bake it, though.
