I'm going with the VHT rattlecan. We'll see how it holds up. I'll post some pics of the cam cover in the next day or so, it's first on the list.

I didn't think of the UV issue when picking Por-15 engine paint. I know the Por rust preventive coatings are susceptible to UV light but not sure about the engine paint. Auto engines are not exposed to light the same way as our motorcycle engines so this may be an issue...less with silver though I suspect.

Edit: just sent Por-15 an email asking about the UV resistance properties of the engine paint. I'll let you guys know what they say.

Cheers, would be really interesting to see what they say. I really like the "toughness" aspects of the POR 15 so would be a shame if the UV aspect makes it not really suitable.

Por-15 guys responded to my email question about UV stability of the engine paint...

Response... "Hello Edward. The Engine Enamel is UV stable, so it will withstand the sunlight that hits it."

Sorry to regurgitate a somewhat dead thread, but I had EXCELLENT results with Duplicolor High Heat Satin Black on my old 750.

              Cheap, and readily available.

With any paint, prep is the key. The more time you spend on prep, the longer the paint will last.

Hi Pete, The POR 15 products cover each stage of prep and finish and going by the results of others they seem pretty happy with the POR 15 line of gear. Their aluminium engine enamel may not be the perfect match to Suzi's but if all the cases are done with it, it will still look the goods, cheers.

Thanks for all the info guys, I'll definitely start by looking at the POR 15 stuff as I've been impressed with what I've heard and I haven't heard a single person say anything bad about it yet.

As far as Duplicolor goes, I don't know if we have that over here, never seen it.

Anyways, now that I have another shelf freed up in the garage, I can start pulling the transmission and crankshaft etc. out of the crankcases so I can prepare to paint.

And, in case anyone's curious, I'm not going for the stock look at all. I want to gloss or semi-gloss all the bits that are hard to polish, so crankcases, cylinders, head, etc. Then I plan to polish up all the crankcase covers and starter motor cover for a nice contrast.

Yet another revival to this old thread...

I'm finally going to order some paints and stuff this week to get a roll on again (thanks Mr Rudd!), and had an email conversation with the POR 15 sales guy over here in Aus.

Interestingly enough, the engine enamel isn't high heat enough for the fins of an air cooled engine, so they actually recommend the Brilliant Aluminium or the Black Velvet high heat paints. Unfortunately that either means silver or matt black.

I'll be taking a closer look at the colours in the catalog I have to see if the black is too matt or if it will be okay.

Only other downside with these high heat paints is that they need to be baked on, either in an oven or with the engine running. This is to prevent moisture build up underneath the coats of paint.

Seeing as I can't see me getting the engine running in a short enough time, I guess I'm going to have to try to bake it the oven or something.

Just finished painting my GS1000 engine with POR-15 silver engine paint. Hope those guys you talked to were just being over careful about the temps. I'm going to be majorly bummed if this paint burns and turns brown.

Going by what he was saying, the only issue is going to be the fins, but given other guys have used the engine enamel and that I haven't heard anything bad yet, I would say you should be pretty safe.

                            Time will tell I guess...

On top of the head, and around the exhaust ports, should be the highest temps I think. The fins should be lower temp since heat will be getting sucked out by the air.

Yeah good point, didn't even think about that!

Anyway, I can't seem to find my catalog now to get a better look at the matt colour, so I'll keep digging.

Guess I'll stick with what they recommend for the time being and see what happens.
