Playing around with a Basic paint scheme

Thanks for the offer of the mudguard, but I need to find one that suits the scrambler style, so I most likely will end up sticking with my existing one for this.

Ok i'm getting stuff ready to paint.

One question, which primer filler do i use on the plastic side covers and rear section behind the seat and can it be used on the metal tank?

Use the same primers on the plastics as the tank but .....
I use “plasti primer” on the plastics first, meaning on the plastics there is a special type of paint to use so you can spray enamels/acrylics over the top, the plasti primer bonds to plastic and gives good adhesive properties for other paints….

I found it in spray tin form from supacheap/repco (3m, K&H etc)…caution though its not like normal paint it sprays on like water so a very light thin coat is applied which means also the can goes a long way (I got 3 bikes from one tin)… this on plastics first, then you can apply anything over the top, the other bikes were painted over 3 years ago and still look like they were painted yesterday, when I clean the dust of them (no cracking or lifting)….

The pictures below gives you an idea (finished it last week when it was raining notice the ground is wet and no I don’t have a spray booth)…this is a plastic front guard using the plasti prime under automotive acrylic I used the same paint for the tank, there is high fill primer with some spot putty over, primer and colour over…
All up.. 2 coats high fill, spot putty, 1 primer (thinned high fill), 2 colour (green), 2 blue pearl in clear (fading off) then 3-4 coats of straight clear. The last clear coats were sanded each time before the next coat was applied with 1200g….This is straight from the gun and I have yet to polish it oh and the strip, is lace fabric sprayed over with the blue pearl then removed leaving the pattern behind, great detail at the start and fades off with the fading of the blue pearl…the whole bike painted over the weekend (I use my oven at home as a bake oven)….

may I say you mentioned that your not a panelbeater/spraypainter by trade and don’t have patients…trust me neither am I or do I……a Classical French trained Chef by trade and........ ALL chefs have no patients….


Painting really isn't complicated nor time consuming!

Ok i sprayed the front mudguard and wet sanded it and buffed it and it came up really good!, But i have found a pic of my bike as a cafe racer and i have to say it has given me bad ideas! What do you think?

No pics as yet, i'm pretty impressed with it though, its just white for the moment, the cafe racer looks awesome, i'm not to fond of the wooden seat though. I cant see it costing anymore than it would for me to respray it with its factory body work. I'm abit iffy on cutting the frame down to make the tail shorter etc. Feel like i'm cutting someones arm or leg off lol

Cafe's are definitely pretty cool. I was initially going to do that with mine until my wrist buggered up and I don't think it would cope with clubmans these days. That's why I'm attempting the scrambler look instead if I can pull it off.

Before you chop, just remove the seat pan etc. and see how it looks.

This is a quick photoshop of the tail cut down with the standard tail work. Dont mind my bad photoshop skills. Probably go for the same paint scheme, red or blue or whatever with the white stripe.

Well i had a play today and i mocked up where i want the seat to go, took some photos and i'll put them up later, i also played with the handle bar angle to resemble more of a cafe racer, and i have to say it handles very differently, tight corners are abit of a handful though also its pretty hard on the wrists so i dont know if i'll be able to handle that lol

Definitely looking forward to those pic's!

One thing to note with the 'bar position... if you're just inverting the stock 'bar, then it will be nothing like a true indication of how something like an ace or clubman 'bar will be.

When I initially was planning on mine being a cafe before changing to the scrambler style idea, I just inverted the stock 'bar, and no way was that gonna be rideable like that.

I think a proper ace or clubman 'bar will have your hands higher up than the inverted stock 'bar and therefore shouldn't be as hard on the wrists.

That is true, and they hit the tank when i go full lock both sides, so its def not staying that way. Its my main transport so i want to be comfortable but i want it to look good too.

I really like the cafe look but wonder if the theme is getting overdone.

For me, if planning to use it as a daily rider, I'd pass on the chop chop and go with the comfort and practicality of a stock mount.

Last winter the GS was pressed into daily service after my college student son grenaded the engine on his car. (wife says the poor boy needs a car and donates hers after she already had the keys to mine in her purse).

So, the PO had installed much lower bars. Superbike?. Whatever they are, I need to get off my lazy, uninspired duff and switch them back to stock. They are just not at all comfortable riding around town.

Saddling up in a couple of hours to take a afternoon ride and really wished I had this taken care of.

Sweet little GS your have there. I'd go with the red and silver motif.

Dont see many Caferacers around here, but seeing as it is my daily transport i will tone down anything i do to it, so it is still comfortable, i would love to keep its original paint job but i dont know if my patience could handle that lol
