    Silver Paint for Frame

    Hi guys.
I am considering painting my frame silver on my 1100. Do you guys have a choice of paint that you have used in the past that looked good. I like the color on the 1150 frames. It will have to be a rattle can also.

    Cheers

go to autozone, o'reileys, advanced, whatever parts store is nearby and get some of the duplicolor factory match paint for cars. find a silver you like and get some of the clearcoat too. this paint has treated me well on 2 of my jeeps that are night and day differences from the original sunburnt paint. just make sure you take your time, if it takes less than about 10 hours(not including drying time) its probably gonna look like crap. oh and dont forget to buy fine grit sandpaper (start with 400 before paint and up to 1000 after paint is applied) good luck!

I used to spray paint frames, until I found a good powder coater. It's SO much faster and easier. No cleaning, no hours of sanding tiny nooks and crannies. Just drop it off, they do all the work, the finish is gorgeous, it's impervious to chemicals, and it's way stronger and chip resistant than a rattle can..all for about $200. That includes the swing arm, battery box and all brackets. I'll never paint a frame again.

go for the powder coating. weigh up the costs.
labour to rub your frame down, primer, paint, clear coat....
powder coat is so much less hassle, strip the frame, take it there, pick a colour from a colour chart and leave it with them.
as stated, stronger, more durable, less chip resistant and definately a better finish than a rattle can job

Some people want to make their bikes presentable on a budget. If you are going for a showroom restoration powder coating is great. If you want to turn a $900 dollar thirty year old bike into a $3000 bike that is fine also.
Lets face it,how much of the frame is visible after all the parts are on it.
Rattle can finish if done with care can be very good quality and leave cash for other items.
My take on powder coating frames.

work out the costs to rattle can it, then strip your whole bike down again 12 months later to do it all over.
all depends on how much pride you got in your ride, fantastic paint job, shiny bling or just a resto project, budget paint job on a frame is what holds it all together

Local PC guys by me charge $500 for a frame and swingarm.

These parts were painted with Por-15 Hardnose and Chassis Black paint. Cost was less than $100 + numerous hours.

So far, I've had excellent results with aerosol epoxy paint, courtesy of the local Ace hardware store.

                      I used this on my 85 750EF.

                      Went from this

                      to this

                      To this
So when I wanted to do my 78 1000 frame I got some more

                      Black this time.

                      Before and

after. Not bad for a rattle can.It does need to be left to cure though.

I bartered with this shop (serviced his powdercoat oven), but normal price would have been 200.00 for all of this:

In my humble opinion, why spend countless hours fine sanding and rubbing out a frame when you really don't see that much of it. I've painted frames before with just gloss black rattle can paint and did not do any sanding or rubbing. Just let it dry and it's done. Seriously, unless you are going for absolute perfection, I think it's a waste of time.
