Before you get stuck in - and I couldn't care less what you do with your tank, I'm not one of "those" members - you may well be able to find a tank that fits that already has knee dents. My '82 GS1100G tank does. You can still get these tanks new from here:
CMSNL specializes in Honda Motorcycle Parts, Kawasaki Motorcycle Parts, Yamaha and Suzuki OEM and Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts for Classic Bikes, Dirt Bikes, ATV's, Snowmobiles and more

Check out Ebay too - there are often used tanks on there which already have the shape you might want and they are often very cheap. I only mention this because it might save you some hassle. I love the shape of my my bike's tank and have modified it to attach to the bike differently because I am using a much smaller seat than stock. Plus it's being powder coated right now. But apart from filling the sides where the logos attached I haven't altered the shape - it's cool. Kneed dents are cool!

Dear Mr. Pitbull... Where did I tell you what to do with your bike? I suggested that IF (read carefully) that tank is in good shape that you find another tank to hack up. Do you care to think about all the rea$ons I suggested you don't hack it up? If you do, try looking on Ebay and see what those tanks have sold for... But hey, after all it's your F@#$ING money and you can throw it away any which way you'd like.

Rusty, you said a different model tank. If i wanted a different model I would get one. If you meant for that to sound different or it was different in your head I'm big enough to apologize but what you said was get a different one and don't hack up the 78 model.

Pitbull, in good condition those 78 tanks can sell for upwards of $400 and I suspect quite a bit more if one could find a NOS fuel tank. Even $200+ for an average one can help fund quite a few needed bike parts.

Either way, I don't matter one iota to me as I already have two of those fuel tanks. But, it might matter to you.

          Regards,
          Dale

P.S. even with quite a few dents in it, as long as it isn't rusty inside, it is worth quite a few $$$...
Are you doing a restoration project of some kind on a GS? Let everyone see what you are doing by posting the details here.

He said that because the '78 tanks were a special one year only tank that is highly sought after by those who want it to restore their bike.

You made no metion about the condition of your tank until after you copped an attitude. Now that we know that your tank is likely not worth rescuing,
feel free to do what you want, without offending anybody that might have paid you good money for a pristine '78 tank.

By the way, an attitude like that will keep many of us that might have the perfect answer to your question from providing you with the information that you seek.

No, we have never noticed that, thanks for pointing it out.

OK Spyder is relatively new, but Rustybronco and I have only been here for seven years now. We have both done many things behind the scenes that the rest of you will never know about, and you will probably never fully realize how much we do like these bikes and what we will do to help keep them going.

While everyone catches their breath . . .

You should try out knee dents on a spare tank or have a spare tank at hand while you bang on the original, just for insurance in the event you go all Thor on the denting. If you crack the tank, you'll still have one to use for riding.

If the stock tank for your bike is rare, etc., all the more reason to try denting on a second one. Check the mounting points and channel size for your tank, and use that to scout out a spare tank, perhaps from a different year or model. If you have any welding skills, you can go broader in your search, since you can relocate and weld the bolt mounting bracket to fit your frame, so long as the channel size works. Although the parts nos. don't match, the GS1000 fiche for 78, 79, 80, and 81 appear to use the same shape and size of tank for the E models, maybe the G as well.

The L model tanks will be different, to allow riding side saddle.

Ok. Now I get it. Rusty I apologize. You're right I didn't realize they are "that rare". I just see on here how people get scolded because someone doesn't think they should hack up these bikes. The way that read to me was way different than what you meant for it to be.

Pitbull, thanks for that... It tells me a lot about you. Yes you are correct, it is your bike to enjoy as you'd like so have fun with it! But, be for warned, skills we like to see, hack jobs not so much

                      Pitbullmccoy...

For example, a Buy It Now fuel tank on Ebay for the low-low price of $400 that someone pulled the trigger on; more than likely without nary a hesitation.

Yes sir. Not the first time I put my foot in my mouth. Im on here multiple times daily and don't want to fight with anyone. But I don't like when people scold someone over modification. I've seen some ugly bikes on here but wouldn't dare tell the owner. I plan to cafe mine but will keep it somewhat original looking. For example I am going to shorten the rear and move the rear cowl forward because I like the shape. Same with the tank. I like the shape but want concave sides. That's what I meant by full length Steve.

Maybe I should sell my tank though. I said it's far from perfect but it's also far from bad. I'll try to post pics later if my daughter isn't screaming from the colic. (That had a little to do with my outburst as well. Haven't slept in days)

Pitbull, ISssalll good so don't you sweat it. If you already have the tank and you have minimal $$ tied up in it, shape on away.

Now go attend to your daughter and try to get that sorely needed rest if you can.

I have another question. My tank has the ridge down the length of it with the stripe along with the rear cowl. Does that make it a "skunk" that I keep hearing about? If so is it even more rare?

(answer to your ? - sorta, but the B&W color scheme with the indentation make it moreso Skunk(y)

The "skunk" was specifically the black tank with a white stripe, but the full-length crease was the one-year-only thing that we kept mentioning all along, as in posts 7, 12, 19, 20, and so on.

I know the term "skunk" was not mentioned, but we have not heard anything about the color of the tank.

Although it would not be strictly "original", it would be easier to paint a red or blue '78 tank into black and white than it would be to add the crease to another year's tank.

                                This would be a "skunk":
