I wouldnt use less. It doesnt take much of the hardener as it is.. Just to toss another idea out there... Have you looked into shot peening the motor for its finish?? I think you will like the results better and no paint involved..

No I haven't looked into shot peening.

The engine cases came painted from the factory and that's the way they will be when I'm done with it.

Wonder if you could spray a dry top layer to kill the gloss with a little orange peel?

I'm going to cut out a few metal coupons and try some different things and see what I can come up with. The first will be a little less catalyst/gloss improver and let that set a week before I submerge it in fuel.

I wonder how a nylon wheel and Never Dull would work on our engines? I'm guessing the heat might just burn off the Never Dull, but any thoughts on this route?

There are quite a few people who sand and polish their engine covers. Most say all it takes is a few minutes with some (insert your favorite aluminum polish here) every so often to keep them looking just as they did when they were refinished.

It's all up to you on how you would like to your machine to look. For me, I'm trying as best as I can to replicate the factory finish on my GS1000EC, and that means painted engine cases. Not that I intend on being a 100% purist when it comes to what was or wasn't painted as I intend on painting the lower case half and the oil pan, which weren't painted from the factory. What I'm trying to do in this particular thread is to find out it the colour I've chosen is both durable, and a very close approximation of what they originally were, and that includes clearing the engine case covers.

The Por-15 black may be okay, but the silver will turn brownish from the heat on a GS cylinder head.

This is a great thread! I have an engine that was a spare drag race motor. No street use or rain, elements, ect. VERY clean. What is the best way to clean this motor up? Just dirty from years in the garage. Also how do you get your engine covers nice? Does one clear coat them afterwards so they don't get dull again? Also, where is good source for decals? Are motor cover emblems not available any longer?

Decals from reproduction decals. The correct engine badges are NLA. The replacements are different than what came on your bike.
