Removing a small ding in chrome fender...

Hi all..

Has anybody successfully removed a small ding from a chrome fender. The ding is from the outside in. Looked on you tube and only found vids for car body work.

Removing a ding in chrome is difficult. Most of the time you work the damage from the outside area of the dent moving inward inward. If the dent is small enough you can try a canvas bag filled with fine sand, making a wooden dowel that is finished in an arc the resembles the curvature of the fender and tap that with a small hammer. Or, find a body hammer with face the mimics the fenders curvature tapping the raised portion of the dent with it.

One thing I've considered was the sand bag and the dowel in conjunction with a press.

Start out softly as it's hard to undo the damage if you've gone to far with any of these methods.

Have you considered taking it to someone who does paintless dent repair?

If the dent doesn't have a crease or fold in it, you should easily be able to bump it out with a dowel and hammer over a sand bag. Just don't go directly smacking the fender with the hammer.
Place the fender on a sand bag(or soft grassy soil with a rag laid over it if you don't have a sand bag) place a thick rounded dowel on the back side of the dent, and tap it with a hammer lightly until you notice a difference. Be sure to hit the dent in more than just one spot. Move the dowel around the dent a few mm at a time. This will ensure that you don't create a sharp bump(revers dent) on the chrome side of the fender. Take baby steps with this process. If you get to heavy with your hammer swinging, you will regret it.
Don't apply heat to the fender. It will discolor.

I need to do this as well. Get it as good as I can, if it's not perfect, fill the dent and paint it.

Tom, if the chrome is good, the dents not too bad and you don't think you can properly remove it, sell the fender and get a painted one to fix and repaint.

Paint over chrome!!???!!! I guess you could do that. Not without media blasting 1st...

Sure you can. Sand it first, then paint as usual.

Rusty, I'm being sarcastic. I hate to see chrome painted over unless you absolutely have to. Quality chrome stuff is hard to come by these days. Plus its expensive as s**t to get chrome work done/redone.
