Issues with cyl #2 not running

    Well a "rented" compression tester would certainly be suspect to me. I wouldn't think that plugs in would be that bad if your battery was juicy, but yeah, definitely hot is the way to go.

      I pulled all 4 plugs, screwed the tester in, held throttle wide open, clutch in, start, turn over 4-5 times, pause, again; same process 3 times over. Part of me wants to rule out compression being an issue because all 4 numbers were basically the same. So if cyl 1 has the same as 2, but cyl 1 runs, then its an issue with something else I would think.

            Unfortunately, I am starting to think metric when it comes to this bike (I even argued with the clerk at Ace today over a 15/32 drill bit for a 12mm tap) so I am not sure how these match up. Make sure you get yourself a metric set of feeler gauges so you can stay within the .03mm to .08mm range as stated in the books.

            Also, I didn't see where you answered Tkent's question - did you warm up the bike? Running it at WOT doesn't do anything based on what I've observed so far. You have to get the engine good and hot which is about a ten to twenty mile ride before you will get accurate readings on it.

            It might help to redo your tests with that in mind.

              I took the compression tester back to Autozone today and thought about possible issues that could cause the problems Im having and Ive come to a conclusion: Rust on the inside of the tank. When I got home, I measured out 2 cups of fuel that was taken directly out of my tank via the petcock. I then ran that gas through a coffee filter. I was shocked by how many particles were caught in the filter. I pulled my carbs off and took them all apart. #2 was the worst but #3 also had a lot of particles sitting in the float bowls and the fuel passages. What is the best method for REMOVING particles/pieces that are currently sitting in the bottom of my tank? I tried flushing it out with water but that didnt work. Im hoping there is something that can dissolve what is in there so it can be flushed out and then I can coat with Por-15. I know Por-15 has a tank coating kit which I assume has chemicals that will prep the inside of the tank but is there anything OTC from a major retailer that I can get to clean some of my other tanks I have and some nuts and bolts?

                Go get some CLR. A fair bit of it. Put it in your tank undiluted. Shake the tank a couple times a day, leave CLR in for at least two days.

                Wash out with water, and immediately put a bunch of alcohol in. Drain again. More alcohol, drain again.

                Reinstall the petcock.

                Fill immediately with fuel.
