I think I ruined a VM29 body
While trying to rebuild my carbs I managed to strip the screw slot of the air jet on #1. I tried using a screw extractor and a left handed drill to no avail. I can't get this sucker out for the life of me and it is completely clogged, it MUST come out in order to finish. The way I see it is that the whole body is now trash and I can either find a new VM29 body or find a whole new set of the original CV carbs with airbox and everything. Any advise or a lead on parts?

Penetrating oil!!! great idea! hopefully not too late as there is not much left for a screwdriver to fit into, maybe the extractor will work then.

Are you sure thats a good idea to cook a carburator? thats alot of thin aluminum in there I wouldn't want to wreck something else in the process. but... I guess I got nothing to loose, its already messed up.

Only heat it with an ordinary propane or butane gas torch - not welding gear. It'll be fine. But try the penetrating oil first - it does a really good job of getting between brass and alloy.79 GS1000S

Take it to a mates enginering shop where they have the tools to drill it out. Take a spare air jet so they know what there working with. Do it right first time is my motto

No offense, but I got a little worried when you said you used a left handed drill. If you are using one of those "screw out" extractors, where you chuck it up and run the drill backwards, that aint good enough. you need the screw extractor type where you drill a proper size hole with a regular drill and bit and use a wrench to turn the ectractor counterclockwise and it bites very good into the hole you made . I hope you are using this method, if not, its prob not to late to change your attack plan.

By left handed drill I mean LEFT HANDED DRILLBIT, it is exactly like a normal drillbit but the drill turns counterclockwise. Often simply drilling in the same rotation as to unscrew the thread will cause the drill to bite and turn the screw. And the screw extractor IS the kind where you need to drill a pilot hole, I simply used a different method to make the hole. My problem with the extractor was that it DID bite, but into BRASS, which just tears apart.Last edited by Guest; 06-20-2011, 07:30 PM.

You did right using LH bits. Sounds like you know what your doing, sometimes the job just gets the best of ya...

that it did, it sucks knowing i need a particular screwdriver, not having it, and only being able to justify the expense to the better half by showing her the mangled parts that result from using the wrong tool.now, after buying the $6 screwdriver I needed, o-rings and gaskets for a whole set of carbs, its all for nothing.
I decided what I want to do- I'm looking for a new carb body, and if its too hard to find I want to go back to stock. SO... specifically I need a VM29ss1/01b carb body. (Carb #1) OR a decent set of stock carbs (CV if I'm not mistaken), an airbox and sidecovers and all associated parts
