Are we sure this isn't an airbox, petcock/vacuum tube problem? Does it start better if you pour a little gas on the air filter?

At this point, I am not clear on anything I'm afraid. I've done all of the standard stuff and it does run fine when its warmed up. By rights, it should fire right up hot or cold. At least 3 of the last 4 bikes did when similarily fixed.

I think the gas smell might be a clue of some kind and I guess I should be trying to find out why its running rich. I have the mixture screws at 2.5 out and now wonder if that has anything to do with it.

I will try and start it again and will pull plugs to see if they get wet. Maybe as some say, its pumping a bit too much gas and the plugs are having a tough time igniting things.

I'll let you know what I find.

      Thanks friends.

Put a meter on those wires. Hot and cold peaks my interest.

Plugged passages in the float bowls is where I'd start looking. I would suspect you've already checked to make sure the choke cable is lifting the plungers already...

Yup, those brass tubes that reach down into the float bowl are pick up points for the choke circuit. The carb rebuild tutorial has some detailed info on these, check pages 50 & 51.

Well after the 4 or was it 5 times I dipped the carbs and prodded and poked every little hole and passage in sight I'm doubtful that they are an issue. But then again, I've been wrong before.

I wasn't wanting to do anymore wrenching until winter so looking at them again might not happen for awhile. I'd like to get at least another couple of rides in before the season quits on us.

              Thanks for the suggestions.

Not sure if this applies to the CV carbs, but I had starting problems and clogged choke issues on my carbs. The choke assemblies were good, the pick up tubes were clean and clear. So that baffled me.

Then I looked into the choke tube space in the bowl itself. 3 of the 4 were plugged up such that IO could not spray through them. Soaked them for a good bit and cleared them out. Much better starting experience.

What did you come up with as the cause of your issue?

I've found that an old "G" string, light gauge electric .20 works wonderful at clearing these choke circuits. I leave the brass ball on the end- helps to hold and see it when dropped.

Thanks guys. I haven't done anything since first posting this, just wanting to ride a bit. The weekend coming up is supposed to be colder and wet so being our Thanksgiving Turkeyfest, I should have some time to twirl a wrench. I might be a bit fat and sassy however as I just read the average Turkey dinner with desert and one glass of wine is close to 2000 cal. and I'll likely have a cocktail or two before, double the pie and a few glasses of vino. I bet that tops 3000.....yikes!

I did notice when I last had it out, Sunday gone by, it did start a bit easier but I can't really account for it. I did notice more of a gassy smell when riding too so I'll bet I do have some wet and dark plugs.

I'll try and remember to update this with what I find.

                      Cheers,
