Got that theory. What is the purpose of the rubber section at the end of the plunger? Is just a cushion, then I understand that it's condition is not too important. If, however, it is to seal off the gas from entering the enrichment circuit, then wouldn't rubber that is cracked/dried out allow extra unwanted gas to flow. Trying to remember what that section of the carb that they fit into looks like exactly after all this time.

    Thanks,

    DH

Forgot to mention, mine clearly are able to return fully to the closed position. I had checked this out numerous times as did another mechanic.

It's purpose is to seal off a passage. If the seal were missing or badly damaged then extra fuel could flow through the sealing surface. Your's are not badly damaged.

Don't discount a defective carb body as the root cause. Ran into one of those before.

How do the spark plugs look? and don't mean at a casual glance. http://www.dragstuff.com/techarticle...ark-plugs.html

Thanks, well since I canot get new or rig alternative parts, I am no longer pursuing this route. Plugs look a bit rich tho nowhere near black & sooty. Bike runs so good that my priority is to ride & enjoy, pay a bit more for gas use & devote my initial efforts to other maintenance & the millions of other jobs around here while still occassionally checking out other causes. Just took a 400+ mile ride/camping trip. Haven't checked the mileage yet. General riding some in town, most in rural yields 32-34 mpg. I can, at the moment, live with that.
          Thanks again,
