What r these pics telling me?
The other day my bike started acting up. Popping and backfiring. Thought i would check header bolts, one was loose and tried to tightn when woosh it stripped... helicoil later and Found out it was bad exhaust gaskets. So got those on order, sand blasted the headers and painted. Took a peek and one was heavily carbon deposited... Others were whitish... Let me know what u think of the pix.

Check the compression on the white valves cylinders. I hope you didn't burn a valve.
Also how is your valve clearance?1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

Not sure what the pictures are telling me, but looking at the title of the thread tells me that the "A" and "E" keys on your keyboard are not always working.

Pulled plugs, set closest is a recent install, 3 weeks ago... Left to right 1234... Looks similar to the valves.. Cept more tanish... Guess why i was t alarmed at first.... My fuel pilots were between 1.5 and 2 turns out... Maybe i need to go up a size??-Mark

Generally speaking, they should be about double the fuel screw setting, so if they were less than three turns out, you will definitely be running rich on them.
What mods to the bike? Pods? Pipe? Cams? All of these will change demand on pilot settings.

Your bike was running fine, then something happened?
You find #1 is super rich and the rest are lean?
You have VM carbs?
1.5 to 2 is way too much for the fuel screw, should be 1 or less1978 GS 1000 (since new)

talk me off the ledge...
Update...
So I tore into the carbs over the weekend. cleaned and used compressed air to blow them out... inspected all parts, ... I didnt find anything alarming... I decided to put everything back to stock. this included the mains, mine were up a few sizes. So needle position on #3, 105 mains, fuel screw 1/2 turn out, air screw 1 turn out, new exhaust gaskets, checked carb rubbers for leaks.. I turned to my "custom" intake system, and put a restriction on it. bike fired right up, didnt sound buzzy anymore, sounded more mellow, kinda throaty.. a little idle adjustment and she was running good. went down the street and immediately it felt like it had more torque at lower rpm. it was a 5-10 minute ride, i decided to do a 3rd gear plug chop 1/3 throttle as i pulled into the driveway. plugs looked tan, lighter than i would prefer but darker than before I didnt make any adjustments to the circuit yet. I did a quick compression check... between 120 and 95!!! walked away...fired the bike up last night, #3 cyl is cold... great spark, and gas, 90 psi (cold eng and a little oil) I pulled the cover off and measured the shims, one was in spec (#1 the sooty black one of course) all others were 0.038mm and one was tighter than that.. I'm thinking on pulling the top end off tonight and inspect.... thoughts? prayers? Kinda sad.... I need my blankie...-Mark
