    1000g engine, 850 carbs problem

Hi, I put a gs1000g engine in my 850g frame, bike looks great and fires up no probs, problem is.... I needed new intake boots carb to head, so I bought 1000g boots, they are shorter than the 850 ones but put them on the engine, now the carbs wont go on, also when I measured the port spaces I found the 1000 ports are spaced wider than the 850, this wasn't a problem when I used the 850 boots as they are longer, I have read that all the gs port spaces are the same, 750, 850 and 1000. Am I wrong? is this engine for use with slide carbs as mine are cv type are they spaced different to other carbs ? What do I need? new carbs or 850 boots, bearing in mind that the 1000 has longer intake ports aswell so has shorter boots, the 850 has short intake ports and has longer boots.

project café racer is almost done but this has put it back a bit, help would be much appreciated.

    cheers.

If you're still using the 850 carbs then that all makes sense. The 850 used the BS32SS carbs while the 1000 used BS34SS carbs. The carb spacing is a little wider on the 34's. If it were me, I'd pick up a set of BS34's. The 32's are too restrictive for the 1000 engine anyway. Member Chef1366 on these forums was selling 34's rebuilt for a good price. I don't know if he has any more though.

What year 1000 engine? If it was pre 80 then the intake ports are wrong for the CV carbs.

Darn, with so many daily riders it's hard to decide which one to jump on next.;)

He said it was a 1000G engine in his 850G frame.

The 1000G did not start until 1980, so it would have ports for the CV carbs.

By the way, the part numbers for the 850 and 1000 frames are identical.

Dough!!! Missed the "G". Should have thought about it since only a G engine would have worked in an 850 and they didn't make G's until 1980. That at least rules out the VM carbs.

Either way, as you know, the 850 carbs are not the same as the 1000. G or not. So the question is... Did you reuse the 850 carbs or are the carbs from the 1000G engine? If they're the 850 carbs then you should consider changing them out. You may be able to get it running but it will never utilize all it's potential using the BS32's.

          thanks guys

looks like new 1000 carbs then as the 850 carbs just don't stretch wide enough on the 2 outers. I knew I would lose a little with 32s but wasn't bothered once they were upjetted, will be scouring ebay soon.
          thanks for the help.

Have you PM chef1366? He had a couple of good sets that were being sold as is or rebuild for a nominal charge. Like I said, I don't know if he still has a set, but if he does you'd be getting them from a reputable seller.

Would you then mind going into the User CP (Control Panel) and updating your location?

While you are there, add a short sig to show what you are riding, too.
